Removal of timing chain cover...question

I think I have a bad chain guide or tensionor

Going through the Haynes manual, if i want to removed the timing cover it says to removed "drive belt, water pump pulley and the crankshaft pulley/vibration damper"

To remove the pulley/vibration damper it says I have to removed the flywheel cover...

Which would require removing the transmission...right?

If so, is there no other alternative to removing the timing chain cover?

You dont have to remove the transmission. You have to take the all the above pullies plus remove powersteering pump, loosen front bolts on valve cover and the timing cover should come off. hope this helps, by the way you dont have to take the pw steering pump all the way off, just from the motor.

They sometimes suggest removing this cover to jam the flywheel while trying to remove the harmonic balancer nut. But this is usually not removable and the best answer is to remove the starter (a bit of a pain) and jam the flywheel thru the starter opening... No idea why they start wanting to remove the transmission, which the last Haynes book I looked at suggested, there's nothing back there that holds on the timing chain cover.

Like said you use a flywheel holder to keep it from rotating on you. If you have a air impact you can get to the crank bolt and zip it off. Just make sure the impact is going the right way first. This is how I have done all of my covers with zero problems.

4th gear + parking brake (and of course with the driveshaft installed) is plenty to keep the car still while loosening or tightening the harmonic balancer bolt.
