As tough as it was getting the old lifters out I don't think they will go back in easily.

I yanked and yanked on the camshaft and it won't budge. Think for now I am gonna give up and put it all back together. New baby on the way anyday now so if I don't get it running now it's gonna be a LONG time before I get "garage time"!

Thanks for all the help guys! I'll revisit all this this winter, hopefully with more luck!

Oh, one last question, if I use the new lifters, do I need to break them in like I would a new cam?

Yes, you would need to break them in.

Like's already been said, once you break them in on the old cam, they shouldn't be used on the new cam. This is due to the bottoms of the lifters wearing in with the shape of the cam lobes.

Try to reuse the old lifters if the order hasn't been mixed up. They usually go back in ALOT easier than they come out.

You have a long bolt that fits the cam, right? Put the timing gear on that bolt and thread it into the cam and use the timing gear like a slide hammer. Don't "gorilla" it, but do use some force. I would expect you're fighting some sludge build up at the forward end of one of the cam bearings. Using some light tapping force with this slide hammer method, I would expect you can pull the affected cam journal forward, to where it catches on the sludge ridge and the cam becomes harder to turn. At that point I would rotate the cam while pulling on it and see if I could not unscrew it past the sludge ridge.

I'm glad you can move forward now. While your wife does the easy stuff like giving birth, nursing, night waking, and diapers, you'll be out there in the garage doing your manly duty to provide transportation for the family.
