Removing Fan

When I do the conversion from stock fan to electric fan, do i need to take anything off of the engine except the 4 bolts that hold the fan blades on? I've never done this before, i have the fan shroud off, and the fan is exposed. Is that the only thing that needs removed?

Yeah thats all you need to take off. Probably be a good idea to find some shorter bolts once you remove the fan. Oh and take the belt off before you remove the fan...

I guess you don't HAVE to take the belt off, but I usually do.

Your stock bolts should be fine, although you could use shorter ones if you want...they just go into the water pump end anyway.

The fan is all you have to remove, besides the shroud, which you already have removed.

And find a home for the overflow bottle.

I always break the water pump bolts loose and then remove the belt like others do - I think it is easier that way.

Well, i took all the bolts off but i cant get the damn spindle that holds the fan off the engine. does it just pull out or what? Oh, and I havent taken the belt off yet. Is that necessary to get the spindle out of the engine block?

When you remove the correct 4 bolts, the entire fan assembly will come straight off the pulley and you can lift it up. It's possible that there's some corrosion on there holding it on. Try giving it a tap with a hammer and a long piece of wood or something that will fit down there. While doing this, be careful of the fan blades hitting the radiator when you jar it loose.

Awesome you were right, it just needed a squirt of WD-40 and a love tap from the hammer and she popped right off. Thanks!

Do the same 4 bolts that hold the fan/clutch on also bolt the pulley to the water pump shaft? If so, you need to take the tension off the belt before you try and remove the fan -- otherwise belt tension may break the pulley loose and launch it....

hm mine wont budge for anything.. been trying to pry it off with my full weight on a crowbar.

There are 4 bolts that secure the fan to the fan clutch (forward most bolts)

Then there are the 4 bolts that hold the fan shaft + water pump pulley on the water pump. (bolts on near the water pump)

You only have to undo the bolts near the waterpump and then hit the shaft with a rubber mallet or hammer wrapped in a small towel. This avoids marking the surface of the fan shaft.

The reason that you leave the belt on to "break loose" the bolts is so that the water pump doesn't rotoate too much. Then remove the belt, because as M.Y. suggests the pressure of the belt on the water pump pulley is enough to make it move or come off the pulley completly. I just did all of this this weekend while I swapped out my radiators. I have the pinched finger to prove it...
