Removing Pilot Bearing?

just wondering how you remove the pilot bearing.....i have the engine on a hoist so its easier...will i need to take the flywheel off? is there a special tool?

I think you leave the flywheel in. You can pack behind the bearing with grease, find a metal rod that would fit perfectly in the bearing and tap. That will lift the bearing out hydrolicaly.

But I'd remove the flywheel anyway and change the rear main oil leaky thingy lol Damn I need to get some sleep...

Yes you will have to remove the flywheel and Yes their is a special tool. It is called a slide hammer and you can rent it from auto parts stores like Autozone for free. Might look something like this.

I have a tool that pulls it off, instead of the impact from a slide hammer. But that works great too.

I have had to do this more than a few times and I have tried the slide hammer and a special tool that screws into the bearing with a grease zerk on it to hydraulic it out. Limited success and serious frustration with both. The easiest thing I have found (don't laugh it works) is to pack it with wet toilet paper and then hammer it in with a round metal rod. Its not as messy as the grease method and the TP doesnt have a tendancy to sneak out around the rod if its a little too small.

And DO remove the flywheel and change the rear main while the motor is out. It IS leaking.

I tried the grease method, what a mess. Bar soap worked for me, but the puller is the way to go.
