Removing stock cat-back on bone stock mustang... I like :)

After reading up a little on here with concerns for the amount of backpressure I'd have, I said **** it and cut off the stock exhaust right after the h-pipe. Saw many posts with the loss of low end and such from running no cats and no mufflers, but I figured the 4 stock cats would offer some. I must say I'm very pleased with the results. The car is pretty damn loud, but has a very mean tone to it especially on the throttle. I wouldn't recommend doing this with higher than stock gearing because the drone would get pretty ridiculous at highway speeds. Luckily with the 2.73s, once it goes into OD, I can cruise at 75mph and there is barely any drone whatsoever, pretty quiet actually. I gained a very good amount of power up top and low down. Before (this is an AOD), the car could only spin the tires very little from a stop, but now it roasts them. Just wanted to let everybody know that if you're bored with the complete stock exhaust, heres some easy free horsepower lol... Be careful around cops though

one question..... if it's the stock exhaust.... why'd you have to "cut" the exhaust off right after the h pipe? it just unbolts....

I have been planning on the same thing except with a Basanni X-pipe w/ cats. I think it will sound pretty badazz.

I have also heard a couple of LS1's without muffs, they def sound good.

When redoing the exhaust on my car I ran the car every time a new piece went on.. IE. Open Headers, H-Pipe, Catback

And if you think a car sounds good without mufflers.. then I dunno what to say other than

Loud does NOT equal sexy at all or what so ever.. you can be sexy AND loud.. but not sexy because ur loud

Did that to a buddy's car when we were 16. We thought it sounded cool but in hindsight it sounded totally retarded and abnoixious.

Oh and it made his car slower as well.

A stock exhaust with no catback, is no comparison to a full exhaust. Get some good headers, a good mid pipe, and a good catback, and not only will it be loud, it will sound good, and make more power! We all go through phases, but with enough research and learning, most end up buying good quality parts, to make their cars better.

Yeah, I ran mine without mufflers...for about 2 rev's while on lifts as I was swapping out the stock setup for the Magnaflow catback.

Yes, it is loud...very loud (even then I still had the 4 stock cats) but it sounded awful.

Spend some money and get yourself a decent catback setup - hell, even RustMasters will be better

Way OT: Criticman, how do you like the Magnaflow mufflers? I want my car to have a much more mellow tone to it when I redo everything

Why not just unbolt the exhaust. I think the stock h pipe with cat back sounds like crap when driving. It sounds a lot better with an off road H and no cat back, but still not the great. It does sound great at idle though.

haha believe me this is just a temporary thing... my exhaust was basically rotting into pieces so I decided to just cut it off, (wasn't even worth trying to get the bolts loose) . I cut it just after the flange. yeah i know there is such better sounding exhausts out there (i have a 347 with mac 1 3/4" longtubes, 3" off road x pipe, 3" dynomax race bullets, sounds amazing in my 90) but with absolutely no money in my pocket this was just a nice change in my bone stock DD lol.

I love it. Good fit and finish. Every now and then I need to readjust the rear hangers, but if that ever gets old I'll have them spot welded to keep it from moving around.

Sound is amazing. Not your standard Flowmaster sound (which I like, but I wanted something different).

It idles nice without too much drone or too loud (even with 2.5" offroad h-pipe), cruise is good without drone, but when you get on it...well, you will be heard and you will like it. It can be fun because ricers will pull up next to me and I will have the quiet idle, so they will start to rev. One quick tap of the throttle shuts them up
