repainted grey interior

I have grey interior and I was thinking of repainting it. Please give me your experiences both good and bad. I am going from grey to grey NOT changing colors. I have seen a couple of pictures and they always look good in the pictures but we all know how that goes.

Thx

Are you planning on painting just the plastic or everything? My stang used to have blue interior and the guy who owned it before me decided to paint the plastic a god awful electric blue and the cloth pieces black. Although the color looks terrible, the quality of the paint on the plastic parts is pretty good. As for the cloth seats, he painted them with some sort of upholstery paint and it rubs of very easily. My plan is to replace everything that I can with new but mine is more than likely in allot worse shape than yours.

I will be able to answer your question in a couple weeks. I have removed my white interior and started the prep work. It will be couple of weeks before I spray. From everything I have read and folks I have talked to, if you spend the time to do the proper prep work and buy good products, it will look like factory new.

That said, I will believe it when I see my own results...

Prep Prep Prep.

Personally, i am against painting. I've seen cars in person where the owner swears it came out nice, but it never looks as good as an OEM interior.

How bad is your plastic?? WHat about just removing it peice by peice and powerwashing and degreasing the hell out of it??

The interior is decent for the most part. Some of the pieces have turned a greyish yellow. Such as the ash tray door and the handle for the glove box. I just ordered the ash tray repair kit. Let me know hoe your white painting goes. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the paint actually a dye and not just a paint?

I have restored many cars,I'm also in the car audio business ( which requires a lot of custom interior parts which have to look factory most of the time)... You first have to start by cleaning everything extremely well with a degreaser and when you think it's clean enough then clean it two more times. Then wipe it down with a wax and grease remover. The only dyes i will ever use are made by SEM,They are the best on the market, you can get it from any bodyshop supply or online from eastwood.com. before you start spraying color you first must spray on their adhesion promoter then spray the dye on within about ten min.Use about three light coats, the first coat should only be a dusting, the next two should only be slightly heavier, don't try to cover it all at once, then you should let it sit at least 24 hours before re-assembly. I have had great results with this method. Have fun with it! don't sniff too many fumes!

SEM is the best. But 50resto.com sells dye for the plastics and it comes out great. I did mine the same color to freshen it up and as long as you prep it right and take your time it will come out better than new. Also, the other poster is right.. you will have to paint it all to get it too match. Either way though using SEM or the 50resto stuff.

finished interior...

I finally finished and reassemble the interior. Once I cleaned them up, I did not need to paint some of the pieces. Basically, the plastic needed paint the vinyl did not. I must say that it turned out great. Even the vinyl seat skins look just like the factory leathers that they replaced for a fraction of the cost.
