Replaced Motor Mounts huge vibration in neutral...FLYWHEEL?

Ok. Got the old stang out of storage and drove it home with no vibration. I replaced the motor mounts, started it up, and with the clutch pushed in the thing vibrates like crazy as I rev the engine, but doesn't vibrate with the clutch out, car in neutral and engine rev. It doesn't feel like its coming from the engine. I'm afraid to take it for a test drive. Any thoughts?

What mounts did you get? When i did mine my long tube headers touched the k-member a lil maybe check there.

Sounds like something I went through once with my 87, have you checked the condition of your harmonic balancer?

How would I check the balancer?

Some background...When I built this car I put the tranny Xmember in backwards and drove it that way for years. (i could only ever get one bolt in and needed a pry bar to get it, but didn't put 2 and 2 together until I did my motor mounts). Now that the Xmember is in correctly, I have a vibration, and am assuming the flywheel, or clutch is worn at a bit of an angle since the tranny was slightly off center before.

Is that possible? I prob don't need a clutch or flywheel otherwise, and hate to rip it apart if there isn't a chance in hell that it is the problem.

Sounds like your harmonic balancer.... drive your car up on ramps and with the engine running look at the balancer and check and see if it's turns smooth without any shake or wobble... and look under the car with a flash light and see how the balancer turns with the engine running.

If you can, and if your balancer is stock, you should see like a rubber ring around the perimeter of the the balancer, if severely cracked, or several chuncks are missing, this is usually a sign of a bad balancer

Balancer Rubber was severely cracked, so I replaced it, and yes, I still have the vibration. It is definately coming from the transmission or clutch/flywheel.

How did the transmission crossmember mounts look? What about the trans mount itself?

Id look for something rubbing, air pump pipe, etc...

Trans mount was redone with the motor mounts. I'm starting to think the pilot bearing is trashed. Gonna pull the tranny when I get back from my 3,600 mile roadtrip (I'll unfortuntely need to do it in my other car, which makes it nowhere near as fun).

Pilot bearing completely destroyed as suspected. Now If I could just get the outer sleeve out.
