I think my smog pump is on it's way out as it's making a whining noise as if the bearings are shot. I don't want to delete it as it's a street car and needs to pass emissions. I don't want to spend a lot of money on a replacement though for obvious reasons (if it's not a mod or an upgrade, who cares about it, right? )

I was thinking of going to the junkyard for one but now I've read that they can seize up from sitting around for a long time... true? Should I just get a new one and be done with it?

If so what's a good brand to go with (I assume they are all remans, but you know how much quality can vary with those), something that's fairly cheap and will still last a long time, as the car sees a ton of street miles every year?

I definately would not get one from the JY; I'd take my chances with a reman, it should have a lifetime warranty anyway. You could hunt around for a new Ford one if theres such a thing.

Before you run off to the junk yard check the parts stores. I can't imagine a smog pump being more than $50.00.

You can get new ones through resto houses (at least you could a couple years ago). They were only like 60 bucks new too.

The parts store reman's leave me a little cold and they can be kinda pricey.

In case you need to open yours to take a looksie, here's the inside.

You can see the mainshaft goes through those lobes and the lobes have needle bearings in 'em. When the needles dry up, the pump gets noisy and the mainshaft gets scored (it can be a real PITA to remove a mainshaft if scoring occurred).

The other issue is that when there's slop, the bakelite vanes start to scrape the walls of the housing.

Anyhow, I'd try to find a brand new one if you can.

Good luck.
