Yes. The shift is from a look-up table based on throttle position (TPS) vs. speed (VSS) inputs.

Well that explains alot. Shouldn't I have a check engine light if the pcm isn't seeing a signal from the sensor ?

Probably not. Most CEL warnings are emissions related out of spec alerts.

Im gong to take pics, but if my VSS isnt hooked up then should I have issues with the car coming to a stop and shutting off at idle? My idle is actually pretty smooth, but i can clearly see the speedo calibration gears in the whole of the trans... so im sure its not connected and the harness is off to the side.

Oh i "love" buying used cars lol
