My TO bearing retainer needs replacing :( so i was gonna take the oportunity to throw in a new clutch/flywheel combo while i was at it. The current clutch is fine for now, but i was gonna do it all in one swap while i was in there.
Well now i need that $$ elsewhere and was curious if it would be feasible to replace JUST the TOB retainer? is it something that could be done in my driveway w/o a lift? Im not sure if the tranny has to come all the way out to get to it or not.

the weathers finally nice but its embarrasing to be heard coming half a mile away, and NOT because of exhaust :hide:

Sure your throwout bearing hasn't failed as well? A damaged TO bearing retainer will simply make the clutch harder to shift or stick. When my TO bearing failed recently, I had a metallic squeal all the time, which got worse when I put the clutch in.

You have to remove the tranny to replace the TO bearing and the TO bearing retainer. You can just disconnect the tranny from the bellhousing and leave the clutch/pressure plate/bellhousing in place. But yes, you have to remove the tranny.

You will likely find more damage once you take everything apart. My bad TO bearing ground grooves into the pressure plate fingers and shaved a bit of metal off of my clutch fork. In my case, the clutch fork was still good enough but I replaced the pressure plate to be safe.

Here's a great clutch swap thread: http://forums.stangnet.com/707250-86-95-5-0l-clutch-swap-help.html Be sure to check out my post at the bottom, there is a seal you need to buy if you are replacing the TO bearing retainer. You can't pull it from the old one, it must be bought new.

How do you know the TOB retainer needs replacing? Are you sure it's not the TOB that you need to swap out?

To do the retainer, the trans has to come out.

For awhile i've had a constant light squeek that will go away when any pressure is applied to the clutch pedal. after researching the forums it was my understanding the it was a common problem with our TOB. a couple months ago i aquired another sqeal almost out of nowhere. its quiet at idle or while coasting. BUT if its in gear and the cars moving(accelerating, coasting) it sqeals LOUD!!!!! the car has an off-road midpipe and the sqeal is easily much louder. u hear the squeel coming before the exhaust.
the light squeek thats always been there is still there if theres no pressure on clutch, but as soon as u move the car in gear the loud screech comes in. im assuming its two different issues? but im FAR from an expert

Classic case of TOBfailitis. :nice: Honestly, it's best to replace the full clutch assembly, TOB, and TOB retainer. Possibly clutch fork if it's bad enough - mine wasn't. You'll have to remove the tranny, but with a set of 4 jack stands, a floorjack, and a few buddies plus some drinks, it's an easy job. I went from never doing any kind of real work on a car to doing a full clutch swap on my own. It's an easy job if you have the proper tools and keep your spirits up. Good luck, and the write-up previously provided is exactly what I used.
