Replacing MACH 460 speaker?

going to answer your question first, then post some other comments below that you might find valid. The door comes off easily. pop off the panel around your door handle (on the inside) and put it aside, use a screwdriver and pop out the control panel (where the lock and window switch is) on the arm. remove the lock harness and the window harness. set panel aside. now... this is from memory... but i think there are two screws under the arm rese area that need to be removed, you can see them from below.

at this point just check around for more screws... there are none around the outside.. they are all around the arm rest area/panel area.... i THINK there was one inside the area where the control panel is... cant recall though. lemme know if you need more information and i'll pull mine off to give ya a step by step if needed. anyhow, once its out you need to remove either 4 or 6 torx screws (allens work too) and then just undo the connector and remove the speaker, swap in the new one, reverse steps.

the 460 is not that bad for a stock system, one of my favorites. however mine had a MASSIVE issue that i corrected later by accident. mine REALLY sucked balls... massivly, ZERO bass, horrid volume and was REALLY depressing. full volume, at 80 mph i couldnt hear it with the windows down... anyhow

i was doing small upgrades to my power system to support the stereo i was going to install, i added a terminal battery block (for use of easily adding an amp line) and the combo of resetting the system or the battery block somehow resurrected my system... bass finally came alive (impressive for a stock system) and volume was respectable. it finally shined as a solid stock system for a change.

if you are having issues, give this a shot (reest the system at lest by removing the positive lead from the battery for bout an hour or more, then reconnect) and see if you get any improvement... i did. and i am debating going back to stock to save weight (massive amp, and sub). anyhow.

i hate how the front door speakers give off a blown sound after awhile. The stock 5x7 has a plastic ring that vibrates after time takes its toll on the glue that holds it to the speaker.

If you are going to get a stock replacement speaker from Ford, make sure that it is for the MACH 460 and not the speaker for the regular stereo system as the numb-nuts dealer gave me the wrong one and at half the volume, the speaker started popping...it was the coil bottoming out on the magnet...not cool.

EDIT: you can check by putting them both face down on a flat surface and see if the magnets are the same width...non-MACH 460's will have a smaller magnet.

One of mine has that sound. It sounds fine when you turn it up, but at low volume sometimes I get a buzzy vibrating sound. Can the plastic ring be glued back on, or do you just have to replace the speaker?

You have to flippin replace it. i tried to take the ring off and it tore off the speaker surround from the metal backing.

Does the Mach 460 have individual amps?
i only ask because of the equipment in the trunk. And its not a M1000 system just the stock GT setup. I know the black hang down enclosure is for the back speakers but there is also an amp looking thing there too on th under side.

took a look at my door, and was way off... i was remembering the RSX i had, not the GT. anyhow, you still pop off the control panel, and there are two screws in there. then you just pull up on the door. sorry, dunnno what i was thinking at first.

Remove the tweeter cover, then remove the screw that holds the tweeter assembly to the door.

Next pop off the part of the door you pull on to shut it. Unscrew the switches from underneath.

With that open hole in the door you should see a few screws holding it in place.

Then take off the piece of plastic behind the door opener handle

Lastly there will be a plastic push in style thingy near the speaker on the side that faces the hinges.

I recomend also unscrewing the door lock pin and rolling the window down.

The panel then needs to be jarred up. try bumping your palm on the bottom of the panel. it will move about 1/2 inch. then pull it away from the door.

From there speaker work should be easy, its 4 screws.

getting the door panel back on is a pain, be patient and dont force it.

There are 2 amps for each rear speaker set-up (mid-range and tweeter) the fronts share an amp. It's behind the radio bezel mounted to the floor i believe. I'm not sure but I think that the air bag controller is there also so make sure you are pulling the right connectors for the right part. To be sure, I'll go home and check the Service Manual and give you an update.

EDIT: Yep. The manual says that it's mounted to the center console but it's so far in there that it's just about at the level of the floor.
