Replacing rear axle shaft this weekend, have a few ?s

This weekend I am replacing an axle shaft in a 95 cobra w/ABS.
The car hit a curb and bent the axle shaft. I'm also replacing the front wheel bearing and one of the bent tie rods.

So far I have:

  • a used axle from a 96 cobra with ABS plate on it
  • floor jack
  • jack stands
  • wheel chocks

I plan on getting:

  • rear - 3 quarts Amisoil , Mobile 1 or Redline 75w-140 gear oil
  • rear - Axle bearing / seal
  • rear - Pan to catch old gear oil
  • rear - The Right Stuff to seal housing after re-install.
  • front - Tie rod
  • front - Wheel bearing hub assembly

Since this is the first time I am doing it, can you let me know if I missed anything and any gotchas I should watch out for.

Thank you !

It will not take all 3 quarts, fill it on level ground, then when it over flows just let it stop leaking, then put the plug in. Don't forget 1 bottle of Friction Modifier.

I think the outer wheel bearings have to be pressed in and out.

You'll need a new axle bearing seal, since you'll ruin the old one getting it out.

For the rear bearings, you need a slide hammer with a bearing puller on it. You can "borrow" one from an AutoZone or Advance Auto if you can give them a deposit for it. The axle seals can be pried out with the end of the axle shaft, but the bearings need some serious persuading with the puller.

A bearing/seal replacement tool is also useful. However, I had good luck using a cast iron pipe coupler (just the right diameter), with end cap, to help tap the bearings and seals in place.

All done ! The bearing was in good shape so we didn't change it.

Had a hard time locating a socket big enough to fit the front wheel bearing bolt.

The gear oil fill was also a pain to get to with the car on jack stands and it was almost stripped out.

The alignment should come Monday. Thank all of you for you help.

Do you know of or used a differential cover for the 8.8 that has a fill and a drain in it or have any opinions on that?
