Replacing Water Pump (and also changing coolant)

Well, my WP is on it's way out. Not leaking yet, but it's making a whirring noise and i can smell burning.

Looks like a straightforward job. 5 or 6 bolts and it's out. What's behind there? Gasket? O-ring? RTV?

Basically what do I need to do the job. I want to set it up to do it next weekend and leave the car parked til then. I commute 50 miles each day, so i dont want to chance it.

Also, motorcraft pump? Which one? About to order one off RockAuto and they list 3. I was going to go with the PW464 pump for my '03, but they list two other pumps...one that says "w/ total performance package" which looks electric and another that says "w/o total performance package" that measures 87mm from block to snout.

I take it my '03 has the shorter shaft WP so the one i picked has the 65mm distance from block to snout

its just basic hand tools, and take the belt off, its a o ring just put some o ring grease on it, or vasiline.

EDIT: I just ordered a motorcraft pump and new gasket from Rock Auto for ~ $80 shipped. Should be here by the weekend.

Here's the state of my current pump. I can still drive..but i'll be staying local and doing only short trips

You should hear it when the engine's running. I can hear it over my exhaust! It feels rough when it spins too. Definite bearing failure.

At least i caught it before it left me stranded somewhere.

piece of cake.. hardest part its swapping over the pully.. just loosten the bolts before you take the belt off..

I just took my WP off...granted it was with the engine out of the car, but it was easy. I had to bang it off the block w/ a mallet - it was a very strong seal, but it was very easy, and I can imagine just as easy w/ the engine in the car

retaining bolts & studs 15-22 ft lbs
nuts to 71-106 inch lbs

I did a WP on Hack Job before when I set the motor in. Unbolt the bolts, then gently tap the edge and it will pop out. O-ring gasket should come with the new pump as mine did. I just got the "better brand" replacement from my local AP store. I did a stock T-stat and upper hose while I was in there.

its retardedly easy.

0) drain the radiator, there is a knob to do this on the bottom passanger side of the car. the green spray will fly out, so have a wide mouth pan to catch it, or put a 3/4 hose on the spout to direct the flow.

1) loosen the bolts of the water pulley (leave the belt on) as it will give tension to the pulley

2) remove the serpentine belt

3) there are 4 bolts on the water pump, loosen them, if necessary use some wd40. dont make the bolts snap off now

4) after the 4 bolts on the water pump are off, pull it out. mine rusted together to the engine block, so more wd40 is needed and a flat head may be needed to pry it off.

5) clean out the water pump's hole area and mop up any old rubber grommet or whatever.

6) new rubber ring grommet thing on new pump

7) bolt it back in, i dont have torque specs, i just got it back on tight with basic hand tool

8) put belt back on

9) stick a hose in the radiator and flush out anything in there

10) close radiator, pour some 50/50 coolant into the tank. start the car but dont close the cap let it start to boil over.

11) squeeze the radiator hose to push out air, add more coolant. (the hose is hot)

12) let it cool down, the coolant in the tank will reside then add more coolant. squeeze the hose to get rid of any remaining air.

13) check a day or so later and make sure everything is cool
