Restore or Not?

Hey everyone...I am a newbie with a basic question:

I have a 68 plain jane coupe (289, C4, plain hood, etc) that was my car in high school. It will likely need new paint, motor, and possibly some other stuff (it has been sitting for at least 10 years).

Is it worth it to restore this car? Or would it be better to just go out and buy a more "interesting" mustang (fastback, GT, etc)? Sentimental value is there, but I always wanted a more unique Mustang...are the really plain coupes popular?

Coupes are a dime a dozen, so when you ask is it 'worth it' , it depends on whether you mean from a nostalgic perspective or a resale value perspective. If it needs a total restoration, you will spend far more money than the car would actually bring once completed. So there would be very little chance of profit. If you intend to keep the car for a long time, and resale is not in the immediate future, then of course, by all means restore it.

Restomod it and make it unique.

You should start with a complete assessment of the condition and your goals. If you have a solid rust free car then you have an excellent platform for either a restomod or stock restoration. While it will never have the value of a more unique factory car, you can have a lot of enjoyment with the car you have. I would lean towards keeping the car I have in hand, provided the body is in good condition.

Just because it's a coupe doesn't mean it can't be a cool looking car. Sure most people like the rarer models and the FBs, but I've seen many a coupe that are jawdropping. If your going for a unique car, a 68 of any model car isn't going to be like a civic or other car you'll see anyday, a classic is a rarity in itself for the most part.
If you have the money for a nice FB, then by all means, go for it...but just the fact that it's a coupe doesnt' make it boring or average

The '68 coupe, or any coupe for that matter, makes a great project. Don't listen to the snoots who think it has to be a vert or F/B to be worth anything. Just make sure the car is in reasonably good shape, structurally, and then go for it. The suggestion of restomodding was a good one. You can make the car fit your personality.

Hey guys, thanks for the great/insightful feedback! Pat, your 66 has inspired me to go for a slight restomod! I think on sentimental value alone this car is worth a fortune to me...thanks for the encouragement!

There are some Coupe's on this Board alone that are Very

Also fitting the car to your Personality is Ok,
As long as your not an A**

I say go for it and restore/restomod it. I have a '67 6-cylinder that I have had since HS (18 years) and i am in the process of a complete restomod. I realize it will never be worth as much as I put into it, but I then again, I really don't plan on selling it. I will probably love to give it to one of my kids someday!!
