Next up on the Mustang project is addressing the undercarriage. This car had little to no rust. The old one, I had just painted semi gloss black which looked good, but looked dirty after driving it down the road, and chipped really easily.

I always said, the next car I do, I'm going to Line-x, so here we go. I went ahead and invested in the spray gun.

I did a little test area first, good thing I liked it, because when it dried it was not coming off.

First had a lot of chemical cleaning to do, then wire brushing, then a coat of expoxy primer to seal. Then four coats of Line X.

Couldn't help but check to see how well the Line X matched the wrinkle powdercoat I'm using on my suspension.

And just for fun

I figure you would have installed some sub-frame connectors before coating it.

I powdercoated the subframe connectors wrinkle black. I wanted to have the metal behind them coated, so when I weld them in, I'll put epoxy and line x over the welds. It will look like I did it all at once, but all the metal will be coated this way.

Very cool. What is the chemical you use to clean with for the prep work?

Still trying to catch up to where I am now, next up was paint stripping!
This car is going down to the metal. With a repaint on this car, I'm not taking a chance on something popping up down the road.

Driver Door

Then after cleaning the metal with the DA and then scuff pad and prep sol, we have nice clean metal to start working with. Driver door had no filler but needs some in a couple of places.

Passenger door was next

Then trunklid

No its not even close to done.

But to keep updating, more paint stripping, but moving to the actual shell means having to strip some bondo too.
Drivers side quarter

Just a little bondo on top

Passenger side looks like it got swiped some time right about the wheel well.

Too much bondo, not enough metal work

Next up was the roof.... I knew this was going to have a ton of filler in it.
And it did

Because of how thin the roof metal is I had to strip all the bondo by hand.

Looks like at least 3 layers of mudd

Finally stripped

Some high spots and some really low spots. When I get done with the hammer and dolly, it will be good as new

Bondo all gone

Good to have that behind me

You don't screw around. That roof looked like a nightmare. Man I wish I had some body work & paint skills.

What color will it be anyway? Not sure if you mentioned that.

Thanks, it was a nightmare. I have over a hundred hours in just stripping this car to metal.

It will be Black...as it should be, no fancy graphics or stripes. Just as black and slick as possible

Thanks Guys! I hesitated to start a build thread because I thought all the pictures of a bare metal car and hours of sanding pics would be boring.

Glad some enjoy it.

Sure, I have two kids, they are seven and three. But, they make great little workers.

Here are some customer parts I powder coated today.
