On a pair of ported E7s with a cam about the same as a B-303 and a cobra intake should I stay with 1.6 rockers or go with 1.7, I was thinking staying 1.6 would probably be the best option, but im not 100% sure, thats why Im asking for help. If I should stay 1.6 is there any real advantage to getting say a set of ford racing roller rockers over keeping the stock 1.6s? thanks!

the extra lift will make that cheaper cam shine..... I have the 1.7s and the B-cam, there is a noticeable difference just by bolting on the 1.7's....... IMO

can stock valve springs handle 1.7s, and would I lose any low end torque using 1.7s over 1.6s? I chose a b-type cam over the E because of the lower end torque, so i dont want to lose that.

The stock springs without the spring shimmed should be fine up to .53 ish total lift. Just watch your rpms. The stock valve springs once worn for 100k miles are down to the 60-70lb seat pressure range so you want to keep it under 5500rpm if you can.

I think John is right on the money and I could not agree more.

Stock springs can get tired pretty quick.

The extra ratio rr's will put more stress on the springs.

Like anything else in this hobby

It depends on your long term plans

I got a thing about not wanting to put much money in a set of oem iron heads. Not saying anything is wrong with those heads

however

That opinion is based on wanting the performance that Aluminum heads can more easily give you.

So you see, E7's were only a stepping stone for me on the way to the better flowing heads.

I had a set of E7's I bought with upgraded springs that came with them. I self ported them. Had the stock valves back cut and had the same guy do a fresh v j on them. I never used anything for rockers other than oem cause the gain from upgraded rockers was not worth the buck spent to me. I had a total of about $425 in them.

I only said all that to show .............................

I can get my money back out of them with that kind of thinking.

As for your concerns about roller rockers

If you went to a 1.7 rr, the gain would be small over the oem rocker.

Your stock springs will be fine with the oem rockers and stock cam up to around 5500 rpm. With the cam, I would feel better about a spring with more beef myself.

Just a few things to show, it can save money to think ahead

Well the E7s are just a stepping stone for me as they were for you. Im going to use the budget build that Im doing for about 2 years or so while I work out what I want to do, whether it be build a new motor, do a good HCI on my stockblock, or buy another mustang, so if the gains are minimal, ill stay with the 1.6, thanks Grady!

I do understand and I had a lot of fun with those E7's.

It was no power house but it was lots better than stock.

Sometimes, you can run across a killer deal on 1.7 rr's and then you get that gain for an amount that is more reasonable. You also have made your E7's a bit more valuable when you wanna get rid of em.

But when new, the gain from rockers is just not worth the price to me.

Heck, you can get the same gain from a home made cai for about 1/10 of the rr price.

Good luck and have a lot of fun with the stepping stone combo

Be sure and keep us updated with your results

you could pick up a set of 1.7's in the corral classifieds for around 100$ wihtout trouble.
