rockerarms loose when valves are closed?

i have a 88 roller shortblock, with D0oe 351 heads, and tfs stage1 cam that i am building. when the valves are closed the rocker arms have a little side-to-side play.... is this normal for stud mounted rockers, or do i need longer pushrods?

does anyone think using longer pushrods, then adjusting the valves like a chevy would work?

I am thinking you need longer pushrods. You shouldn't be able to move them much if any if they are installed correctly. When the valves are closed, do you have up and down play in the pushrod? Are the lifters in their fully extended state?(plunger ALL the way to the top of lifter).

This is tottaly normal. Adjust them the proper way and dont be paranoid. If you have solid lifters you will get some valve train noise during operation but dont be alarmed. If you have hydraulics, they will chatter on strtup till oil fills them but it will go away after just a few seconds.

use the proper lengths. If you go longer than recommended your gonna get an expensive surprise

there may be some up and down play on a couple but its not alot lot. maybe 1/32"
some of the plungers are up and others are down.

i see what you are saying, and im probally going to at least run the engine with these pushrods to see what happens.

valves have to be adjusted on chevys, so why wouldn't that work?

Get longer pushrods, you shouldnt be able to much the rod up and down at all. With the correct length pushrod moving the rocker side to side alittle is fine.

i didnt read that he had up and down play. Yes, u need longer pushrods. Who recommended the ones u have now?

Your lifters are probably just bled down. What you need to do is readjust first before you go buying pushrods. TDC, take to zero lash and then 3/4 turn (or torque if pedistal mounts) . Your lifter plunger should compress about .030. I think the small amount of play you're feeling up and down is probably the lifter plunger moving. When you start the engine that play will be gone.

What rocker setup are you running? Guideplates? You cannot run the stock pushrods with guideplates if thats the case! I run these heads also and have had great success with them.
