Rotors?

For an 87 5.0 what is a good set of rotors to go with? Are cross drilled or slotted rotors really worth it? If so which are better? Thanks

cross drilled have a tendence to crack so slotted might be a better choice.

I've heard the same thign with the cross drilled rotors. What advantages do slotted rotors have over just the regular ones?

supposed to let gases escape thus keeping them cooler. Personally I don't road race so factory rotors are more than adequate in my case. Not sure if your going to notice much if any difference in normal driving conditions.

Go with the Power Slots. Steeda and now Summit have them for about a $100 a piece. Throw on some good pads and you will be happy.

If not needing rotors for autoX or bling, I also like solid rotors myself.

Stick with solid plain rotors...they are the best.

Power slot rotors rock. Not sure about for a 5.0, but on my z28 they were amazing! Everyone would love how the car picked up, but they couldn't believe how quick it would stop. I had hawk pads and stainless lines along with them, and it's not just for road racing.
I don't know about everyone else but my stang's brakes suck, bad. So that is why one of the first things I do to it is going to be the brakes.

i got brembo solid rotors...supposed to be better. havent had the car running long and good enough to actually try them out.

I find that US or Canadian made rotors last far longer and do not warp nearly as much as overseas made. They will be more expensive and probably harder to find, but worth it.

for the record when i switched to s/d rotors over the solid ones, i felt a difference in stopping.

i got them for the pretty factor and havent had any problems. i dont autox or brake hard, so i dont plan on having any problems. especialy since i bought quality/expensive brembo rotors.

Remember that ANY change from old rotors to new rotors of anyt type...whether hi-performance or overseas crap will feel better. Fresh rotors just "grab" better than old rotors.

It's always funny to hear guys claim how much of a difference drilled rotors made...and then they leave out the part about their original brakes having 35K miles on them and being glazed.

I wouldn't get cross drilled, just slotted. from what I understand you lose surface area that the pad is clamping down on with cross drilled and they tend to crack, slotted allows the gas out from between pad and rotor fine and does not have the tendency to crack

The cross drilled rotors cracking is a common misconception. If you're out road racing on a track, and constantly going from 100-0 as fast as possible, then yes.. they can and probably will crack. But for every day street driving where prolonged aggressive braking is not there, you won't have a problem with them.

I bought cheap e-bay slotted/crossdrilled rotors and i've regretted it since they showed up. I havn't had the car on the road to see what they're like, but the quality is definetly not there.

Goodthing they didnt cost much! $80 Canadian to my door!

Mike, great point about the glazing. Amazing how much simply getting the glaze off helps.

Nick, some of us are referring to the cheaper rotors that are sold at online auctions, etc. I would not hesitate to run Baer or any other high quality rotor. Dont forget that track cars are generally properly bedded/burnished and brought up to temp for the event (not to mention checked out Very often). DD's have people jump in and stand on cold brakes, drive in the rain, etc.
