rpm gauge stuck on 4k

Hey guys,

For some reason my RPM gage on my automatic 92 vertible gt, is stuck on 4k.
engine idles fine, revs fine, but is stuck on 4k. I have recently been downshifting alot, dont know if this has anyhting to do with it being stuck on 4k. when the car is off the needle on the gage returns to 0 rpms, and if the engine is off but ignition on the needle is on 2k, when I start the engine it goes to 4k, but the engine revs normal. when I step on it it barely moves up.
any ideas?

get a new tach. The stock one is garabage.

I do have a new tach, But I would still like my old one working. If I install a new one I would have to find a pod for it or screw it somewhere on the dash and leave the non working stock tach unusable? Seems to me that it's ok to have a second more accurate tach yet still fixing the stock tach, No? Let's see some feed back.

I know there are shops out there that repair gauges. You would have to pull you gauge cluster and take it somewhere to get it repaired, asuming it can be repaired.

Or you could snag a gauge cluster from a junkyard, and maybe just replace the tach portion of your gauges. You could always replace the whole thing, but then your mileage would be off.

There's probably just some electronic component that has failed, but it's beyond me to know what it would be.

I understand wanting to get it fixed, having the stock tach stuck at 4k would drive me nuts, even if I had an aftermarket tach.

i had the same problem, mine was stuck at 3k. I took the cluster out. unscrewed the plastic, and lifted the tach side of the cluster out. lift it out even. Look at the back of the tach. There will probably be a burnt spot. Take a solder gun and just reheat the connections on the back of the board. Put it back together, and try it. I did this and it worked, but broke again. I took it apart and actually added a little solder to the connection, and it hasent broke again. the solder connections fracture and cause the tach to get stuck at a certain spot. It has something to do with the resistence and the faulty resistor connection. Scott

Just did the same fix. The one resistor on the back of the tach gauge will have brown spots were the contacts heated up. Remove the 4 nuts from the circuit board and remove. I just heated up the old solder and it worked. You might want to add more solder the first time. I even found a 4 cyl one at the junkyard, it had the same problem also. Also why its off, replace the bulbs and clean all the gauge faces with armour-all. It looked new.
