Running to hot or timing

When the car is cold it runs smooth. When it gets to 190-200 I get the pinging. I tried high octane and low octane gas and its the same. Last year I ran the car at this temp and no problems. If it was timing would it do this only at high temp or should I change the stat. There doesn't seem to be any signs of over heating. Autometer electric gauge.1988 5.0 stock.

I would set the base timing a little lower and see what happens.

I agree, especially since it wasn't noted where the timing is set right now.

Is the temp sender in the location where the stocker was?

Thats what I'll start with the timing. I guess I should see where I'm at and adjust from there. Never touched the timing before so maybe it needs some adjusting. Yes the sender is where the stock one was.
