I have a rear end from a 2001 ranger with 4.10 and a locker. I got this rear end from a ranger that i had rebuilt and the long tube was slightly warped from the accident. when i replace the rear i put the old one out by the shed and water or moisture got in it and part of the ring has surface rust on it and wont turn all the way now because of it. can the ring be cleaned and reused? thanks in advance...

I'd try a scotchbrite pad.

i will try to get some pic of it later on this evening when i get home...i figured that I would be able to get the rust off, but with the tolerances that a rear end has, I didnt know if it would still be ok to use...

If it rusted to the point where you couldn't turn it, then I wouldn't use it. The pitting on the speedo/antilock brake gear is pretty bad. Can't tell about the ring and pinion though, but as I said, if it was frozen with the rust, it's pretty well screwed.

it wasnt frozen in the rust. the rusty part was the part that wasnt in the oil i guess when the rear end was sitting outside. the gear wont turn past the rust though...i think if i can use those gears, thats all that I will use, in a different rear end...

Give the gears an acid bath and see how they look.

i am going to try to at least clean them up before i trash them, plus that rear end has a locker in it, that must be worth somethin...

They're rusted up pretty bad. What I'd do is clecn them up with some wire wheel as best I could and use them for a bit to see if I liked that ratio. They're pretty much junk, so you won't lose any money trying them out. Consider it a little "R & D."
