rust spot

hi guys,

i have a line of about 6 or 8 small rust spots, a few about 1/2 in diameter, most less. the car is in excellent shape, as far as rust goes, and i am not having it repainted for at least a year. so....i just want to quickly and easily, yet effectively take care of it. I thought I would tape off a box around the group of them, about a foot long by about 2 inches, sand the rust out, clean it good, a few thin coats of plain ole rustoleum with very light sanding and blowing in between. done until the car gets painted. sound about right? any hints?

how about the color of the primer? i would rather gray, it would blend better with the blue; but don't other colors last better over the long run, when exposed directly to the elements? i thought i may have heard that about the red color.

I'm guessing this is over or near the wheel well. Primer has a porosity problem and lets water thru. You'd have to topcoat it with something else. I seriously doubt it will get a whole bunch worse in a year, even if you daily drive it. But, the thing is, lots of us intend to fix something in a year and don't. Example, I've had my '65 coupe since '87. In '88 I had a tread seperate on the pass. rear and shread the 1/4 panel. I also found out later that evening that my g/f was moving 18 hours away and in my frustration, took a ball peen hammer to the 1/4 thinking I would get it replaced in the next couple of weeks. It's what, '04 now?.....

You beat up your car over a woman? An enamel primer should be ok. Better than nothing. Just don't use a laquer primer as it has no water resistance.

Yeah, I was a stupid kid. She ended up cheating on me with a married man and I dumped her. It tore the outer wheelhousing all up and folded the bottom of the 1/4 up into the trunk along with tearing up the dropoff. I had a empty gallon gascan in that dropoff and a quart can of bondo and a quart can of fiberglass styled bondo. It dribbled the gas can off the bottom of the top of the quarter and beat the heck out of it. The quart cans, it twisted them open like biscut cans and deposited a nice blob about the size of 2 fists on top of the wheelhousing and the bottom of the upper inside of the quarter panel. I was doing about 65 and the air rushed in the trunk, went up above the headliner, and riped it open where the rotted threads held it together. All this dust fills the cab of the car, it's night, I'm in the country on an old two lane blacktop and there's no moon. I took it out of gear and pulsed the brakes till I came to a stop as I couldn't see a damn thing. You can see pics on my webpage if you click on my name.

Man!!! That is a big bummer for sure. I was a fool when I was younger, and fell in love with every girl I met. Got my heart handed to me on a stick several times. Gotta good one now though. 20 years. It was worth the wait.
