Hi guys.

I'm new to this forum and have been reading a lot of your posts. It's incredibly informative.

Anyway, I bought a car off ebay and took it to a mechanic for an inspection. The mechanic noticed a few bumps underneath the vinyl - mostly on one side close to the inseam. He thinks it may be rust but doesn't know.

I then took it to a body shop and the guy came out and said because the bumps were hard and didn't move when he pushed down and a few were around the inseam, he thinks it's rust but against he doesn't know.

Is there any way to "Know" short of ripping off the vinyl?

Shoot, do it right, peel it off, sand and prep the roof and repaint. Tops are not hard to put on, but to do it right you need to pull the front and rear glass. The tops are cheap ($50). I have done mine twice now.

Bite the bullet and peel off the vinyl, prep the roof, add new vinyl. I put off doing mine and almost lost the whole roof.

I didn't like the vinyl on mine and just removed it. Its amazing how bumpy the roof was when the factory knew that a vinyl top was going to be installed. It needed to be worked to look smooth.

My brothers that I did had the same as you. I ripped off the vinyl expecting a real disaster and it wasn't bad at all. Just scrape everything off and apply a new top, but you don't HAVE to put a vinyl top on. It can be worked to be painted.
