I just had two mechanics tell me that if I switch to 31 spline axles I'll see a loss in rwhp do to the weight of the axles. Is this true? Are they that much heavier then our stock axles?
Given the small rotating mass, I can't imagine that a larger axle will have anywhere near as much affect as say, a new set of wheels. Even if they weighed twice as much, they have such a small diameter that there just isn't going to be much if any affect.
I can see the reasoning behind their theory, but I don't agree. The pinion is going to climb the ring gear at the same rate despite the weight of the axles. Of course, this is all within reason. If the axles weighed 2 tons, that may be different. The axles that are a few pounds heavier may result in 2 less RWHP, if that.
Thats what I thought, and I tried to explain that to these guys, but they insisted I would see a loss. Both of them are pretty knowledgeable with drag racing. Maybe I'll just have to prove them wrong?
BB&T racing has a package for $559 that includes
-Moser 31 spline axles
-Eaton Posi diff
-Wheel studs
I think thats a pretty good deal, haven't been able to find anything better. The one wheel peel is getting old and the local Fun Ford Weekend is coming up.
