Rythmic groaning from rear-end

Hello all.
This will be my first post here so I hope I'm posting in the correct location.
My sweetie and I have a 1998 Mustang Convertible and over the last month or so have noticed a groaning sound eminating from the rear of the car when making sharp turns on uneven pavement or when making tight manuvers in a parking lot. so far I have inspected the brakes for possible rubbing and the u-joints with no issues found on either one. I am leaning toward thinking thatthis a wheel bearing going bad, but I am wondering if anyone else has encountered this or has any other ideas of what else I should check before going to the shop.

sorry i got distracted...have you changed your rear end oil? might be something in the diff

Darn you silver sn95 v6, you stole my line! Well, assuming that your sweetie has nothing to do with these groaning noises coming from the back, try having the struts checked. My car made that noise from the front 5 years ago, the shop replaced the front struts and lubed the sway bar bushings, and that stopped it.

Actually I have already ruled out struts because the sound seems to be speed sensitive. In other words the rythm speeds up as speed increases. I probably should have mentioned that in my original post. sorry

Hmmmmmm... well in that case, beats me. I'm sure the good people at your local Ford dealer will be more than happy to steal your money while you wait for 2 hours.. personally, I go walk around and look at the cars for sale; the salesmen hate that! "Sorry, just looking, my car's in the shop!"

could also be your tires letting go. Loss of traction can make weird noises and it depends on tire and tread what yours will sound like. you might be a rhythmic groan from spinning out. i learned this lesson the hard way. spun out and into a row of bushes coming into work, in front of the boss. she laughed while i swore profusely. I used to hear a groaning sound and one day it just let go and there i was pruning bushes. Other than that it could be bushings or like i said earlier, something in the diff.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll take a look at the bushings. I think while I'm at it I'll get it up on jackstands and rotate the wheels by hand to see if there's any play in the driveline or differential. Thanks again.

repack the bearings while your at it too...my Bronco had similar issues and that corrected the problem.
