i just listed my stang and inside the first 24 hrs someone responds through email about interest and yada yada yada. Turns out this cat wants to send money on money order from a seperate buyer sending me 10k too much and looking for a refund on the back side. Sounds wrong doesn't it? And wants some personal info to attempt to complete the deal. Only, the number he finally sends to me is a fax number with a machine attached. Anybody had any experiences with trying to sell and someone trying to scam their car or what not?

i would abandon ship on this deal. get as far away from this guy as possible. there is no legit reason to give you $10,000 more for your car, then want it back without some sort of scam involved. sounds like he knows a way to get a free $10,000. probab;y something like cancelling the money order or something along those lines.

don't do it.....had someone try that on my old GT hood......

you'll get money, but then the bank will see that it bounced, and take all the money back from you, and you'll be out a car

they are probably from out of country somewhere as well, somehwere they don't prosecute for that stuff....

my guy said he was in cali, but i tracked his IP to israel....

This is most definitely a scam. The buyer will typically pay with a money order, cashiers or certified check. Problem typically is that the check used was forged or stolen. By the time the bank figures out what happened you will have already shipped the car and sent them the balance. As stated above the bank then takes all of their money back and you lose it all...

IT IS A SCAM!!!

This happens all the time, especially when listing vehicles or other expensive items on-line. There is no legitmate reason for anyone to pay you more than your asking price, and there is no reason to send "excess" money to a 3rd party.

Do yourself a favor and tell the guy to F-himself. This is a well known scam. You'll ship him the car with the overpayment and within 1-2 weeks the check that he sent you will come back as counterfeit. Now, you'll be out the overpayment and your car.

The scammer doesn't want your car. All he (she) wants is the $10K overpayment. They probably want you to send them the extra $10K immediately by Western Union so you're screwed and can never get it back.

I sold a pinball machine a few months ago and got dozen's of e-mails from scammers like them.

SCAM!!! I advertised my accord before i bought my gt, and a guy contacted me through autotrader. same thing, his client was going to make out a check to me, but include the guy's comission, so i had to send the difference. in small print on autotrader's fraud section, they show the exact same scam. report the guy!!!! keep him on the hook and try to get his info or forward the emails to the DOJ.

The guy actually called me back today and was a nigerian. He would not let up on the cashier check. I told him if he wants my car that he will do it my way which is by direct wire transfer only. He wouldn't back down, so i told him it looks like he doesn't want to do it my way and considering it is my car, he can pisz off!! Then magically we were disconnected. I can't thank you all enough for the help.

His ethnicity has little to do with his morality dmax. Locational scamming as indicated by Beserker, okay, I can see why you wrote it. I am glad you got to tell him to take a flyin' F*.

Glad you didn't get scammed.

It's not about ethnicity plus nigerian isn't an ethnic group Like you said, its just a location thing. It's just a simple fact that if you get a call like this from Nigeria, there is about a 99.9999% chance it a scam. Their gov doesn't crack down on them and the organized crime for this kind of thing in Nigeria seems to rule. I don't do any business with anyone from Nigeria or Indonesia. Nigeria is the worst. With Indonesia they would order a product and cancel on the card when they got the product. No more of that.

Being an ignorant American - I lumped the whole nationality into an ethnic group. My bad. Thanks for the education Beserker... Meh I am a "work in progress" and always happy to expand my horizons and knowledge.

New Factoid for Jenn's brain - Nigeria consists of 250 ethnic groups; the following are the most populous and politically influential: Hausa and Fulani 29%, Yoruba 21%, Igbo (Ibo) 18%, Ijaw 10%, Kanuri 4%, Ibibio 3.5%, Tiv 2.5% (No wonder the Nigerian census doesn't break them apart - dang darn that would be one long census form. ). English is the national language. Religious demographics Muslim 50%, Christian 40%, indigenous beliefs 10%.

I have a feeling much of this information and "figures" are scewed. Especially since this came from the CIA website.
