School me on brakes

So Ive done alot of searching on brakes and what not on here. Most people say bang for the buck wise the 13' bullit/mach1 upgrade is the best. I agree, it's a very nice brake set up. I just don't see the point in buying new calipers when I could paint mine red. Im pretty sure the calipers are the most expensive part of that kit, right? Would (minus the steel lines) just getting all new rotors and brake pads and painting my calipers be pretty much the same thing or does upgrading to those calipers/lines have a better breaking effect too? I just dont feel like spending like over 600 on front and rear upgrade all together. Maybe im not seeing why it wouldn't be a good way to go but if I am not please let me know.

to the best of my knowledge the cobra upgrade has dual piston calipers while the other basic ones have a single piston calipers... also the rotor would be physically too large for the piston and mounting hardware to clear.

No, it's not the same.

I believe the bullit calipers are 2 piston calipers (as opposed to 1 piston stockers). The S/S lines are also better than rubber ones because they won't deform under heavy pressure and provide move positive braking. You will not get the same braking power by doing what you're asking.

This should be in Tech btw.

The brake calipers are slightly better and have all the improvements mentioned above. However, under severe duty there is a chance the aluminum PBR calipers will bend out from the piston force and permanently distort.

I do not think the solution is another, slightly better, set of PBRS.

I think the choice should be:

-just changing fluids, pads, turning rotors, complete brake system tuneup for about $100 maybe throw some speed bleeders and/or stainless steel lines on for an extra few bucks

OR

-brembo 2000 cobra R brake kit for about $750

The CObra and GT calipers are not the same thing. Correct me if i'm wrong, but the way i'm reading your post you want to buy the 13" rotors but reused your GT's calipers??

The 99-04 GT's due come with 2-piston 44.5mm calipers, but they are a different design from the 2-piston 40mm calipers used on the 99+ Cobra/bullitt/mach1. They arer both aluminum and on paper just looking at the caliper the GT's caliper should outperform the Cobra caliper because of it's larger pistons and larger pad surface area. Unfortunately, mechanical leverage is a very efficient way to overcome physical hydraulic clamping power.

You can't intermix them. The Cobras caliper bracket pushed it further off the spindle to clear the larger 13" rotor. None of the parts interchange so you really need to change the entire caliper.

Just do the front Mach 1 kit for $310 and call it a day. No real need to do the rear brakes unless you need real braking power for autoXing or open tracking. I've been running the 13" front brakes with the stock GT rear brakes on the street and haven't had any complaints despite my aggressive driving and heavy braking.

www.buyfordracing.com has good prices and their kits come with SS lines which make a huge difference in feel as well

Kilgore, I was thinking the same thing if i just got new fluids/change pads that would probably be the best bang for buck but I figure seeing as i like to piss my money away, a set of larger brakes, with red calipers would not only be better but also look much better (since my car is red). I think I might consider that and just paint the calipers. Because it would probably look almost just as good. Especially becuase If i want to go with the fronts like mustang 5l said which is the other thing i considered, I wouldn't wanna leave the back puny ones, i just dont think it would look right IMO. Thanks both you guys for the advice. I think im just gonna service them, then spend the extra cash on gears and maybe something else.

I agree 100%. The only difference on the rears is the bracket that holds the caliper for the larger rotor. I bought the entire kit calipers and all and when I was installing the rear calipers noticed the same part number that was on the new ones matched the old ones I just took off. But it was ok because mine needed to be replaced anyway.

It's not that noticable. I hate how small the rears are, but i'm too lazy to pull my axles to install the rear cobra brakes.
