As posted in the title. I went to get my car inspected here in NJ a few days ago, while running a 93 octane tune on my 08 V6 and failed. The guy doing the OBDII system check asked me if i had recently disconnected my battery because his computer could not read my ECU. The battery wasnt disconnect but he told me to do a drive cycle 100 miles then bring it back. Well as it stands today, I went back to the stock tune, i still have my BBK CAI installed and just put a new battery in. After going back to stock with the BBK Intake i got the usual CEL, put a new battery in the car (nothing to do with failing inspection but was in need). CEL went away for about 5 miles than came back. I unplugged the battery again and let it sit a few minutes and reconnected it. As of right now there's no CEL. Could the BBK without the tune installed be the cause? BBK is a "tuneless intake". If the CEL comes back I'll try just throwing my stock airbox back on to see if that fixes it. Has anyone else had issues with Custom Tunes and inspection?

Chances are the Brenspeed tune had the rear O2 off and/or some other emissions tests turned off. The base tune they use from SCT has things turned off by default. Supposedly that helps the computer clockspeed, BUT, the tunes won't pass OBD2 inspection unless all that stuff is turned back on. Brenspeed can tweak the tune for you - just let them know you have to pass OBD2 emissions inspection - or you can go back to stock for inspection purposes.

I just went through the inspection hell also this summer. However, going back to stock was not an option for me - my car is F/I. What code is stored? check it with your tuner when you get the CEL again. If the code is P1000, just drive it until it goes away. Everytime you flash a tune or disconnect the battery you are re-setting your CEL, AND also setting your emissions readiness monitors to a "not ready" status. P1000 only means the monitors are not ready. That is what OBD2 inspection checks for - it needs your monitors to be "ready". If there are no codes stored, other than the P1000, and you are running the stock ford tune, you just need to complete a drive cycle to make the monitors go "ready". Some cars need alot more miles than others to go "ready" though. If the monitors aren't ready you won't pass inspection.

FWIW, between Brenspeed and VMP I finally got a tune that would pass OBD2 inspection - but it took over 900+ miles for all of my monitors to go ready. EVAP is usually the hardest to get set "ready", however in my case it was the easiest one. Go figure. I also used a code scanner to watch for monitor readiness before I went back for the test.

Thanks for the very helpful info jpplaw. After disconnecting my battery for a second time the CEL came back. So tomorrow im gunna throw my stock airbox back on and also check to see what code is being thrown if any. Again thanks again for all the helpful information.

So i just did a scan with my SCT Tuner to find the code causing my CEL. i got P0171 system to lean (b1) and P0174 system to lean (b2). Which i guess is because i still have my BBK CAI installed with the tune current not installed. Which is a little confusing because BBK claims its a tuneless Intake and i drove the car with the Intake for a good 5 months before i ever bought the SCT Tuner without ever getting a CEL. But in anycase im gunna throw the stock airbox back in and see if that clears it. Damn Jersey and OBD2 testing.

Have Brenspeed send you an emissions friendly tune. I have no trouble passing NJ emissions with my Bama emissions tune and a supercharger.

I passed with my '10 GT with 91 octane tune on an SCT Xcal II from Brenspeed. If you didn't specify that you need to pass emissions when you ordered the tune, then they probably shut off certain things like the O2 sensors for an 'off-road' tune to offload computer workload. They can fix it, but the onus is on you. As far as the CAI goes, well, there's your code right there. According to those in the know, there is no "no-tune" CAI out there, because if there's more air intake, you're gonna run lean for the factory settings, and if there's no extra air coming in, well, you bought nothing more than a decorative pipe. Get your tune straightened out, leave your CAI on, and you should be fine.

Thanks for the heads up. Yea when i ordered the tune from them i told them i needed a emissions friendly tune. I drove my car for a good 5 months with the BBK and no tune before i got the SCT tuner without any CELs. But now i do have a shakerhood so that could be part of it maybe. Either way i pulled the CAI off last night and the CEL is gone so im just going to let my computer do its 100 mile cycle and try for inspection again. Thanks for all the replies guys, I'm gunna look into getting a inspection friendly tune from Brenspeed though.

I had the same issue in Texas. Call them up and they can email you the tune to pass. They did it at no charge for me.

2007 GT emission Pass ?

Hey guys, I just bought my 4th Mustang and the previous owner made some basic mods. The car was from FL but I need to pass PA emmissions. Here's the mod list...JBA Headers, offroad H pipe, cat delete and Steeda Mufflers, K&N CAI, BBK throttlebody spacer. Without the cats, do you think there's anyway I can pass PA Emissions? I think the installer must have used O2 eliminators b/c its not throwing a CEL. I was thinking about an SCT tune but I figured I'd get it inspected first before I really start any mods. Comment appreciated.

Went for inspection again today. Passed this time haha. Now its time to pull the shakerhood off again to put the CAI and tune back in.

Mike2007gt i highly doubt you'll be able to pass emission with the offroad pipe. If you dont have a CEL right now with the offroad pipe and CAI your car might already have a tune on it. I could be wrong but maybe someone else can chime in to confirm that.

I know this is like 2 years late, but I had a similar issue. Yesterday the difference is everything came up unsupported. Retuned to stock went back today came up not ready. So seems the SCT tuner has a lot to do with it and how they tune. Maybe the performance tunes are unsupported I have no idea. Its real annoying tho.

So I went back to stock throw a CEL for lean cuz no tune and intake. I drive like 4 miles a day. I'm gonna have to go crazy this weekend driving to complete a drive cycle and go back Monday.

And when I called Bamachips asking if they know of a solution they told me they never heard of a car not passing and inspection cuz of a SCT tuner.
