Seam sealer around shock towers

I removed my spring, upper control arm, shock,etc... and was grinding away all of the gunk on and around the shock tower when out came a long strip of what looks like a beige seam sealer on the sides of the shock tower. This is on the inside of the tower, not the engine side. Has anyone encountered this before? What do I replace it with? It looks near impossible to use a caulking tube of sealer with the fenders on.

I didnt notice it on my 70 when I cleaned out the towers, but you could probably use 3M seam sealer wadded on the end of a 1 1/2 inch putty knife to work it back into the seam, then use a rubber glove and pack/smooth it back into the seam with your finger. If you dropped the whole fron suspension out of the car without removing the fender, I'm sure you'll be able to get the seam sealer worked back in!!!

Good idea. I guess a local paint store would have sealer in a can. I learned some tricks dropping that suspension that'll save time if you ever need to do it. I learned the hard way so there's no need for anybody else to.

Why not just use the sealant gun to squirt it out of the tube into an old butter dish and go from there!

Yeah, whichever is cheaper I guess. I was surprised there was a small gap there but understand the need to keep water out to prevent rust. If I was a welder, I would probably zap it shut. THX for the ideas!
