Seats, what to use

Alright folks,

Time once again to toss myself on the mercy of those who truly know...

We, my 14 yr old son and I are resto-modding a 66 coup for him to drive when he reaches appropriate age. We have done mucho tuning to the I-6 (hoping to avoid the potential re-build), auto trans, power steering, etc. We have ordered a disk brake kit and we await it patiently.

Last weekend we went for a short spin in my uncle's 68 camaro street rod, and discovered something we had not yet planed on. The stock seats and belts did not do much to keep my ample (and my sons skinny) posterior planted.

SO it was off to the catalogs, 2 new front seats, bucket style with appropriate looking appearance... well now, that was an eye popper....

Does anyone have any experience on what, if any junk/salvage yard seats and belts will fit? We can do some decent fabrication but do not want to cut the car to shreds. We want 3 piece shoulder harness' and bucket seats with head rests. It would be cool to hear that something from the late 90 stangs Will fit nice, then we could look for some with running horses or something on them.

And yes, I know we are way ahead of ourselves here, we are still welding up floors, and doing rough body work. But I have learned, keep your eyes open and the right deal will fall in your lap. It is when you need that part now that you over spend!

any fox body mustang seat would be an almost direct bolt in, just drill a couple of holes in the seat frames to match up with the original 66 seat tracks and your in business. seat belts are a different story but junkyard belts have been done before. just do a search for 3 point seat belts and you could probably try junkyard seat belts as well and you'll find a ton of info on what works and what doesn't

Same goes for 94-98 seats. I have '95GT seats in my Mustang.

99-04 seats I think are a touch more work, but can't confirm that.

With a couple of flat steel or aluminum bars and round stock to cut to length and drill holes through for risers (spacers for height), you can make just about any seat adapt to your seat tracks. Also you can get universal tracks and adapt them to your new seats. Either way, adjust the tracks mid way and put the seat where it's comfortable, mark and drilling the mounting holes and your cruisin'! If you're looking at racing seats at all, Check out the summit seats. $200 bucks each, and they are more comfortable than many I looked at for twice the price. I have them in one Mustang and am real happy with 'em.

Hello,

I used seats from a 90's Hyundai.

If your are doing floor work then drop the seat platforms 2 " so plenty of room between your legs and the steering wheel for use with newer seats.

that's why i like the fox body seats, no need to lower the pans, in fact they are a bit shorter than the stock seats. when i originally installed the 86 GT buckets in my 69 i actually sat a little lower and it kinda messed up my arm out the window" height a little, maybe 3/4-1"

I used a pair of seats from a 1986 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe (pretty much the same as Mustang SVO seats). A local upholstery shop stitched-up some seat covers that look like the standard '65 vinyl skins. Now you can buy the retro-look upholstery for the Fox seats ready-made.

Pontiac Fiero seats are another popular choice - try searching the forums here for a thread on that topic. That thread had a link to a website that offered reupholstery kits that were reasonably priced. Cool seats, those Fiero units - designed by the Lear Corporation, not GM.

I have 1986 Mustang "halo" seats in mine, but I also had Honda CRX seats in it at one point. The CRX seats bolt onto the front and rear of the seat platform rather than on top so you have to drill new holes into the floor.

I removed the seat pan and did a frame from tranny tunnel to door with 1" round stock and angle iron to build a solid platform. I got a great deal on 2004 leather power seat out of a crysler sebring ($250). it was a coupe so the seats do fold fwd. I was looking all over and did not find anything that really struck me and this was out in the back of the lot. These seats are awesome, and there is not a big demand for them so they are someone what available. the bolt spread is a little longer than the original pan but the good part is it is almost flat so you can mount to a flat surface making install so much easier.

well, I had fox mustang seats in the old 67 at one point...pretty simple install(I plan on redone fiero seats myself) but from experience I can tell you that with minor modification(one bent bracket, and two holes drilled) the Shoulder belts from a Nissan Pulsar bolted right up in my old 67 coupe

Ok, Fox body seats sound like the deal. Where can we find retro covers for them?

As far as the 3 point belts... junk yard search (one of my favorite pastimes....seriously)

Lower the seat pans (I was going to ask this question anyway, found an article about it elsewhere) will be a good idea. Son is already almost 6' tall and only 14. He will need the extra leg room.

TMI makes both Pony and Mach 1 style upholstery for the 87-93 fox body seats. i'm sue they will also work on 84-86 GT seats as well with minor mods, TMI would know for sure. i believe they will also do custom seat covers using their existing patterns on request as well
