Serpentine belt gettin ate up????!!!!

Man I just don't get it...I bought a ribbed belt and it didn't last me but about 2 months and the ****** is shredded. Worst of all it took My A/C clutch with it. So I bought a new belt and before I put it on I checked all of the pulleys for play and none of them make noise so I would assume that the bearings are fine, but it is eating my new belt to peices...Belt paritcles are allover the altinator, water pump, compressor, well everywhere there is silver and that is visible to the eye. everything is tight, all brackets but I don't know what the cause is or how to fix it. Is there a way to check pully alignment or anything to fix this problem. Man this sucks.

What parts of the belt are being chewed up?

Side of the belt = pulley alingment or walking

Bottom of belt = pulley that isn't spinning correctly

I had that problem,and it turned out that the pulley on my steering pump (plastic0 had a piece broke off,and the sharp edge was eating my belts.New pulley,no problem.

It seems to be the sides of the belt. The inside-side of the belt that face like the motor. I will take a closer look at the power steering pump pulley. The only thing that I have changed since I dropped the motor in like a year and a half ago was a 3G alternator. I picked it up on EBAY and it fit fine after I notched the alternator bracket like they said that I would. Since I have underdrive pulleys, I saw on here that people were putting and overdrive pulley on the alternator so I did that as well, that pulley came from Summit. Lastly, I just recently replace the power steering pump. All I did was use a pulley puller and pressed the pulley on the new pump, pretty much standard. Is there a way to check pulley alignment? Maybe one of my pulleys are out of alignment and I just can't see it with the naked eye.

The best I can figure is that the P/S pump pulley either was not installed all the way on the shaft, or it is starting to back off for some reason.

You can confirm the pulley is installed properly by looking at the shaft, which should be flush with the pulley.

I have had good luck in the past 'eyeballing' the alignment of my pulleys. What I do is move my body so that the center of a couple of pulleys appear to be in line. Then withoug moving, look at the pulley that is in question. In your case either the Alt or p/s. I have not had very good luck using the front or back side of the pulleys to eyeball alignment.

I jumped around the forum and found that sometimes the p/s pully can be press too far or not far enough as you said. I will eyeball it and see what comes up. This is what I am in question with though, why is there belt dust all over the place. If it were to be the p/s pulley then shouldn't it be localized there not all over the motor too. But thinking about it, it would seem feasable that the belt is simply carrying the belt dust. Wish me I guess
