several questions

I've been stewing over a few questions lately that have just kinda popped into my head.

1) if i painted the front of the clutch fan black (que sitars ) would it absorb more heat sooner (due to thermodynamics) in an attempt to run my engine cooler?

and

2) I've got the stock torque converter in right now, and I want to make my trans a little more solid, but i want to keep this car as close to stock as I possibly can, what can be done to firm it up?

i really doubt the paint will make a difference on the fan.
get a shift kit for your trans and it will stiffen it up.

Paint won't change the absorption of heat into the metal. HEat will just be stored in the paint itself. You might seen some change but at most it will be negligible.

Are you running a C-4? no need to "stiffen it up". You can make improvements, like the shift kit mentioned already, other than that there is not much you can do without making serious upgrades. Stock torque converters don't have strength issues.

that does pose a good point.

generally speaking, white paint deflects heat and light while black absorbs it. I;m not after a higher overall temp, but rather a faster kick-in for the fan.


and yes, it is a C-4 when i said "stiffen" i meant the feel of the shift. I'm have no structual integrity problems, but I want a little more solid feel. Like when I was traveling down the road the other day, I slipped it out of drive, and when i popped it back in, It didn't want to kick in right away. I reved it just a bump, and noticed it hadn't kicked in yet, and then after a coupole seconds it finally did.

its also like when I'm from a stop, If i rev the engine slightly (just 1-200 rpm) and try to drop it into drive, it waits and then kinda mushi-ly kicks in, not a solid snap.

the colors black and white do not absorb or deflect heat differently. They absorb or deflect light energy differently, which translates into heat. Since your fan clutch won't be seeing any sunlight, it won't make any difference. The only difference it will make is if properties of paint (any color, it doesn't matter) will cause the fan clutch to hold in heat or dissipate heat differently. My guess is it doesn't make any difference.

I have to ask the obvious because it is best to check the simple things, but have you made sure you have adequate fluid in your tranny?

if color makes no difference then why is a radiator painted black, perhaps heat dissapation
but having said that, aluminum conducts heat differently, aluminum rads are not painted, and most if not all fan clutches are aluminum

simple. radiators are painted black most of the time because they would look utterly ridiculous as any other color. They are only even painted to keep them from rusting, which is true of most parts that are not supposed to have cosemetic value.
