Shaker Hood Scoop On 01' GT Mustang HP Addition

I am thinking of adding the Mach 1 Shaker Hood scoop to my 2001 Mustang GT. The kit sells for about $800. How much horsepower would this gain on my car if I installed it with the factory intake replaced with a K&N? I heard it adds about 5hp. Any other mods that would be much better for the price?

man that kit is all for looks. for me what i'm gonna do is get the mach 1 hood and the shaker assembly and do that. but my reasons are for looks.

For 5 HP gain put some underdrive pulleys for 80 bucks... 10 times cheaper and more effective...!

You can alot better for $800 than to blow it on a Shaker. I don't know what performance mods you have, but you can get a complete exhaust (X-pipe, Catback) for less than $800 if you go through partshopper and use the coupons thy give you for $100 off Catback and $50 off X-pipe. You can get some 3.73 or 4.10 gears for around $170. Get a good short throw shifter for $100-$180 depending on what brand. Underdrive Pulleys are a good mod for a GT. That's just to name afew. Way more bang for your buck than a Shaker.

you could expect any where from 0-8 hp... all it is is a glorified cold air kit... that actually brings cold air to the box.

They look hella sweet though.

The shaker kit is ALL looks.
Someone did some tests on it (I wish I could find the link) and basically the results shows about 2 hp difference. The problem is that the new shaker intake -- unlike the old 60's version -- doesn't sit high enough to get into the airstream, because the hoods on the newer cars are too aerodynamic and actually send the air OVER the scoop.
The last point is that there is no real "ram" effect until you're going over 80mph -- by which time most races are pretty much decided.

So spend $800 on looks, (and it DOES look awesome!) but don't kid yourself that you are getting any performance gains out of it.

Yep, love the look! I think I'm going to put the CDC kit on my car. I have the K&N FIPK, so I'll probably just block off the shaker scoop outlet and not even install the air tube from the shaker to the air filter.

The K&N airbox is open, as are those on most other aftermarket CAI systems, so any ram air effect from the shaker scoop is negligible with these systyems, including on my Mach 1. As myponyrocks posted however, it will deliver more cold air to the vicinity of the air filter

Take it from someone who knows from personal experience, DO NOT install a CDC Shaker Hood kit on your car! I got an '02 GT that the dealership had that kit installed on. A year and a half later I am doing 70 MPH down the interstate and the applique (the black cover that is bolted on top of the hood and surrounds the shaker scoop) started coming off! I check it out and 3 of the 4 bolts that held it to the hood were missing! I took it back to the dealership and they "repaired" it. I kept checking the bolts and there were signs that it was going to do it again. I traded that car in and got my Mach 1.

BTW, CDC says that the shaker kit adds 5% horsepower. If your 2001 Mustang has 260 HP it will raise it to 273. There are a lot cheaper, and safer, ways to get that gain. If you are wanting it for looks, buy an actual Mach 1 and save yourself a lot of headaches.

My Shaker

If your going to do it, do it right and use the real shaker and a real Mach 1 hood. The few dollars you will save using the CDC kit is not worth it and in my own opinion, I think the factory Mach 1 stuff looks better as well. Trust me as I did my share of looking into this before I went the route I did.

Now if your going to do this do it for the looks only! I have felt no real "SOTP", (Seat Of The Pants) power gain with mine even when using a K&N Filter!

However, I do get comments, looks, and a lot of questions, everywhere I go with this car!

I've had no problems with the CDC applique that were not of my own doing. The kits been on the car for almost 20k miles.

However if you want to make a Mach clone or have a solid hood piece of mind the KarKraft kit is the way to go, but if you want a different look go Banshee or CDC

Mine was fine till about 26K. I would advise you occassionaly check the bolts holding it on. Hopefully you'll never have the problems I had.

I have 97 gt with 2001 4.6 in her with ram air hood, flow masters, trick flow throttle bodie, getting ford racing intake manifold in it right now. What kind of hp should I be sittin on ? Going to take it to a dyno wondering what I should expect

Man this is an old thread to be bringing back up from the dead. You should have started a new thread.

As for your question if everything is correct, assuming you have a manual you should be in the 220-230rwhp range on a dynojet. The TB and flowmasters will give you minor gains over a stock stang. The mach ram air kit and ford racing intake manifold won't give you any power.

Hood scoops have never worked.

Cowl induction, where the base of the hood nearest the windshield is open to the intake, that works. Forward-facing scoops do jack-all.

As far as "cold-air" suystems, they only help off the line on a still day on the drag strip at the launch. I won't argue that isn't important, I'm just saying that a kit that sticks the filter under the car is as effective or more than one that opens on top of the hood. Once you are going 70 mph with an open grill and an engine compartment open on the bottom, what do you *really* think is the underhood air temp?
