Shaolin Crane's Project "freebox"

Figured i'd clean up the "other" thread by just copy and pasting and continuing here

Here is the **** i found in the oil pickup

Remachined the throttle body surface since some jackwaggon jb-welded the egr spacer and throttle body on

Finished shortblock

Fabbed up a gt500 heat exchanger in place of the puny vortech one, especially having a mount bracket made for a much cleaner install
Here it is compared to the vortech exchanger

Here is how i had to modify the bracket to rotate the exchanger in place and make it clear on the car

Mounted on the car

Here are all the additional parts I got with the car

Fresh gauge panel
All new weather stripping
Interior and exterior felt trim
Run channel strips
Radiator
Sn95 brake setup
Taylor battery relocation box
Dash vents
Rivet gun
Door panels
Arm rest pads
Visors
And other misc parts

How my shelf looks right now

So I finished sanding off the rust from the car sitting while my back was injured, finished the engine bay, door jambs and hatch jamb. This week i'll re-sand the doors, weld the hatch logo pinholes and re-sand. Just waiting on an opportunity to paint the jambs and bay so I can re-assemble the car and get some shop space back. Possibly get the interior back in and work towards getting the car running. Though that likely wont happen until our anniversary. Here are the pics

Also finished fixing the intake, re-tapped the lower and filed the upper mounting ear flat. Just need to port the lower and then powder coat it.

Yeah, save for welding on the intake, and mixing the paint, porting of the heads and having some buddies come down and help me sand while my back was ****ed up. 90% of everything has been done by me.

Turbines are trashed as soon as I have money for rims, originally wanted 17x10.5 fr500's with a 335 but now everyone has them so i'll likely change it up.

Hey, I want some free box!!

Anyway, let's keep this one on track. That's hardly possible, but looking good so far over there. Got a spare set of black door sills laying around?

You know I do, but seeing as how I need them, they aint goin' nowheres

I do have to add that I have cheated a bit. I'm not exceptionally talented as the pictures would have you believe. I will do body work and have my buddy who is a painter for a living come by and double check my work. He'll look over and show me how to fix things I did improperly and show me a few things on the car. I've ground off more body filler then i'd care to admit after him giving me the no bueno look.

I'm slowly getting to the point where I'll be comfortable doing my own work but honestly if I have the cash to pay him to do all the work I will. Cause I am ****ing fed up with all the body work and just want to get to the fun **** already.

I have 90% of everything, things I need more then anything right now is a dash harness, this one is hacked to high hell. A chassis harness, the piece that runs to opposite ends of the car since someone hacked that one up for the carb fuel system. Fuel lines since there is what looks like a hammer smash mark on the factory ones. And a front bumper cover, other then those everything else is really tiny and those are the only things keeping me from re-assembly.

I'm done spending money on this car for the rest of the year, need to save for our anniversary trip to vegas in Jan, plus b-days, thanksgiving and christmas. I'd like to get my hands on the harnesses though as I have PLENTY of work to do without dropping money getting all that squared away.

Come February i'll be caught up finacially from the trip and will likely be full steam ahead on both cars trying to get ready for knotts. Though i'll be happy if just one of them is finished by then.

I wish I could get a project like this. My buddy junked a rust free 88 LX with a running 5.0 efi in it. Would have been a perfect cheap build. Just needed some new gaskets, rings, bearings, and paint... Too bad I didn't have the space or time for it...

I probably wouldn't have dove in head first on this car if it didnt come with all the ****. Especially all the new un-opened stuff. Having most of the stock parts from the other car as well as a spare 3550, clutch, flywheel, and other crap made it ALOT simpler.

Forgot some pics in the change over.
Alright so now i'm home and i'll lay down the build thus far, everything has been obtained from CL and corral through means of lowballing, yep I said lowballing, but its not lowballing if they accept.
Plan for the car is a DD capable vehicle with umph. Full interior with leather s197 seats, heat, a/c etc. This will be a all around performer street/track/drag/auto-x. It is meant for my girlfriend to have something to race without worry about ruining one of the other cars, cause in the end, its just a fox. Best part its cheap to insure and I got it for free, all work has been done by me and my lady, on occasion friends would stop by and help me with tedious stuff.

Heavily ported SVO Ford heads, purchased for $400 then ported after purchasing, not the greatest but they had less then 10k miles on them and are the ONLY smog legal head for cali, other heads have egr passages but not an EO number, cut to 58cc, bowl work, etc
Accel 44# injectors $125
Eddy RPM 5.0 with 70mm throttle body and egr spacer purchased for $140
D351 1.72 roller rockers with under 10k on them $120
1133 MLS head gaskets 2 for $95
Vortech s-trim kit minus oil lines and crank pulley $650
Vortech power cooler $400 with custom done gt500 heat exhanger
Freshly rebuilt 308 shortblock,-5cc forged pistons, stock rods/crank, block tapped for 1/2" hardware arp head/main studs, .010 deck, about 9.4:1 (built by me) $280
ACC Grind cam .566/.566 218/218 114* with 1.72 $75
Harwood 4" cowl hood $100
Newish rear bumper cover $40
Special color of blue $320 (compare to $1000 from paint store)
About $100 in paint supplies (not including new tools i felt like buying)
Lots of crap i forgot im sure so far about $300 invested, goal was 3k or less but that went out the window when i tore apart the engine and realized i had to bore and hone the block. So i'm upping it to 4k, which i think i can come in under.

Picture time

Untouched ports

Pedestal mounts converted to stud mount

An ls is way out of the budget for now, i was only able to build what i wave since i have so many extra parts. Extra engine, spare 3550, radiator, brakes, spindles, etc.

Everything else i have came with the car, bassani catted x-pipe, interior, msd box, all new trim etc. Im sure once i blow it up i'll buy an ls1 and some vortech brackets for it but for now the cheapest way possible.

Besides, since my girlfriend will race this car more then i will she doesnt want any more reasons for harrassment then she already gets at the track. Ive already had a "chat" with a dude who called her a c-unt after losing to her. And it happens alot for whatever reason.
