Shaving the cowl vent?

Well, like everyone, Im afraid of the terrible cowl vent rot. I was thinking since the car doesnt hvae A/C and wont be driven on cold cold days, I probably wont be using the heater but I might be used every once and a while. Do you think it would be ok to shave the vent? I have seen covers that bolt down and some magnetic, would permanent be ok?

i think it might look goofy. plus, you lose the ability to just open up the vents and get some cool fresh air when driving around...even with the windows down that cool air from under the dash really makes a difference on a hot day. just my $.02

Not in the So Cal valleys and with headers under the floor during the summer.

I thought they leak because the drains are clogged. Seems if you clean them out it would not be a problem.
