I like the idea of a shift kit because its nice and cheap. How much does it cost to have it installed? How hard is the install?

Is it safe? Whats the best brand? What are your SOLID real number improvements. I know it'll shift firmer, but how did this translate in terms of new 0-60s and 1/4 miles? Thanks.

Ok Transgo for the brand A+++
Hard for the install if you don't know how auto's work
Around $75-100 installed and well worth it!

No question go with the transgo. Me and my dad installed mine pretty easy. It was around $100.

What Differences

What noticable difference will you see with the shift kit in an auto? I know the shift will be more "crisp", but how do you hold it in 1st or 2nd longer? Can you better control the shift point with your right foot (on the gas pedal)? Or is this refering to manually shifting from 1-2-D? I've always been interested in a shift kit, but have read several times where it caused premature tranny wear.

Is this something my wife's gonna hate , or is it not that noticable?

www.tccoa.com go for the first 3 tranny articles. I've yet to see anyone who knows more about a 4R70W than the man who wrote the OD 101 article...

Not much RWHP gain That I had in mine " Remember it was in my '01 "
But The shifts are harder adn firmmer and YES 1-2-D is the idea
But If you put it in Drive it will still be an Auto goin g from 1,2,3 ...
But if you put it in 2nd it will run in 2nd only UNLIKE stock witch runs 1,2
The feel is amazing!!
Go get it and come back and join the transgo club!

I've never read in any reputable magazine or text where it says that shift kits are bad for a transmission. Quite the opposite in fact. They keep trans temps down by lowering friction, both of which are beneficial to the life of your auto trans.

As far as the wife not liking it...my wife barely noticed. Of course, she doesn't drive the car.

BINGO!! The articles there are perfect. I recommend the Jerry mod shift kit. I have it in my car and its great. I wont go into technical detail for its all covered in those articles at TCCOA.

One more thing. A transmission cooler will be a must.

Jas142,
Do not buy a Transgo! There have been many people on these threads that have fried there tranny's with them. They do work OK for the older 98 Back trans. It has something to do with the newer Electronics and the OD bands. It explains it on the tccoa.com site.

Go with the Jerry's Mod. It is the best. I have the 300hp level of separator plate drilling and went with the more aggressive Accumulator spring set up. On 1-2 I used the Ford Blue spring upper and no lower. On the 2-3 no spring. I did this on a 215hp car and got 10 foot of rubber second gear at WOTP and a nice quick shift 2-3. At over 3000rpm it will chirp and at leisurely normal driving a passenger would never know it is there, perfect. I have had it for 10 months with no problems. By the way it will actually make your trans last longer, less heat from sliding clutches and wear. Yeah you would think it would do the opposite but it is the better for it. this is also explained on the site. Performance - Has to be a good 3 tenths faster or better. This has been said by others that drag race. I have not -Yet

For your car it will cost- Spring 10.00 & Gaskets 5.00 at dealer, Drill bits at SEARS 15.00

Go ahead and change all the fluid using the Dexron V 30.00 to 40.00 (13 quarts)and a filter about 10.00

P.M. if you want more info.

Redride,
Read my reply to jas142 above. Jerry Mod is the only way to be safe. Post 99's have problems with Transgo!

My kit was installed at 3k after break in!
Maybe this is true But I never had a problem ..
Althought My installer was a Transguy and he did some mod's to the kit like stronger springs adn better valves..
I liked it and never had 1 problem!!

I would do the Jerry mod, but I have absolutley no idea how to do it. I do not trust myself to start opening up my transmission.

You are lucky?

If I were you I would take a look at the tccoa.com site. I am sure some of the problems have occurred with improper installs. It sure seems to be popping up on threads whenever guys use Transgo in the newer Stangs. Do a search on corral.net and this one. I 'll bet you find this to be true.
