shifter choice please help!

ok theres a steeda tri-axe shifter for 80 and a pro 5.0 for 60... what are yalls opinions on both, they both look like good prices i just wana know some comparisons from ppl who have used em thanks

I have had both.

IMO I like the steeda better.

Right now im running a hurst.

I haven't tried the Steeda, but I have a Pro 5.0 with an MGW shifter arm and it is perfect for me.

i chose the steeda shifter because i have never had any problems with their products. i like the shifter and im sure both of them are pretty good

This man speaks da troof. You can't really beat a shifter for $60 or $80, but MGW is the way to go imo.

pro 5.0 with steeda handle. perfect feel. i love the pro 5.0 but its all in what you like best

I have a brandnew t5 in my car. I decided to keep the stock shifter and I added a pro50 handle that I shortened a little more and added a hurst classic white knob.

Every time I have added a shrot throw shifter I ended up grinding gears more etc. The stock shifter rarely if ever causes me to grind a gear. I think that if you trying to shift fast and then add the short throw to it, things do not disengage fast enough and it grinds. Just my experience. But then again I am not going to race this car either. If your going to race you will want a shifter with strong positive stops to keep from damaging the trans.

If it's grinding you're either not shifting correctly or your clutch isn't properly adjusted. I powershift the **** out of my t5 with an MGW and the only time it ever grinded was when all the teeth came off 3rd gear but that's a different story. I had a stock shifter with a good handle for the first couple weeks after I bought my car, and the feel was decent. It's a really bad idea to shift hard with a shifter that doesn't have stops though as you can overthrow it and do internal damage or bend a shift fork.

Like I said. I have a new t5 in my 93 and I dont plan to race it. Therefore I will keep my stock shifter.

I can shift like a mad man. I had a 3550 in my 91 with the 347. I had no issues with the tremec.

My experience with T5's is where I have saw short throws can cause grinding. All though I will say that worn t5's will grind easy anyhow due to syncro wear, add a faster shift to it and it grinds more..... My 93 had a brand new t5z installed right before I bought it. Im sure it wouldnt grind with a short throw. I just do not need it for a dialy driver.

BTW I have broken 3 t5's all three were 3rd gear also. Its the weak link of the t5.....

Been powershifting a 100+ mile T5 for easily 5 years now (probably 120K on it now) and never broke it, blew it up, or had a grinding issue (other than the first shift into 4th gear when the car is stone cold in winter time, and I mean slow easy daily driving shift). Did have an issue going into 2nd one race, but fixed that for cheap.

Some people have good luck and some have bad luck, but positive stops is a safe bet they will help. Racing or not if you slam gears hard anytime, a shift stop will help. The fact the guy owns a Mustang means he WILL shift it hard from time to time. To not have a stop to me is asking for bent forks and a broken tranny.

I have driven probably 20 T5 equipped cars (we owned 4 or 5 at one time, lol) and never had a grinding issue with a short throw? But everyone has different experiences, as we only had one T5 go, and we ABUSE the hell out of our trannys.

I have the pro-5.0 and love it. perfect blend between short throws and not being too notchy. I have a buddy with an MGW and its just too notchy for my tastes. anything is better than the stock shifter by leaps and bounds so it wont matter too much which way you go.
