So I'm putting a few miles on my reassembled stroked '66 with a newer T5 and I'm noticing that the shifter rocks side-to-side under hard acceleration particularly in second gear. Not particularly confidence-inspiring as I'm flying down the road. The transmission mounts seem intact. The motor mounts seem ok too, but is there a better way to inspect or measure them? My only other speculation is that the pinion angle might have been disturbed with the recent reassembly of the car. Anyone had a side-to-side rocking in the shifter, and if so, what was it? Thanks!

Since the shifter is mounted directly to the trans, some movement is perfectly normal. How much is your moving? If it's whacking you or your passenger in the leg, it's probably too much and you should look for broken motor mounts.

If you have a rubber trans mount in there now order a poly one and call it a day. You can order a C4 poly mount and it will work for the T5. IMO there is no reason to use a rubber trans mount when the poly mounts are so cheap/available.

As mentioned before, check your motor mounts. A torque strap would also help even if your motor mounts are good.

Thanks

Thanks guys. The shifter moves an inch or perhaps two while in gear and pedal-to-the-metal, side-to-side, which is the trans going back and forth. Just seemed like it should be pretty steady, if things were working or set up correctly. I'll buy the poly trans mount and probably some better motor mounts. More projects!
