shifting gears ?

i no this is not really a tech question i am sorry, but im having trouble shifting. i would have posted this in talk, but it would have just been killed and ended up 52 pages long.. heres whats happening im new to a mustang and a 5speed.. when im coming out of 2nd gear i miss third, i hit a wall in between 1st and 3rd.. it make me mad, i think its the adrenalin rush i get when i race. when i cruise around i pop out of second and slide it into 3rd.. but when i race i rip it out of 2nd and try to get it into 3rd i miss... this is a vary serious question send me a private message if your talk $h*t.. everytime i post somthing trying to be serious i get made fun of... so if anyone can help me befor this get moved into talk i would be thankful!

get a pro 5.0 shifter it will help a bunch.....missing 3rd is commen on stangs...ull get used to it and before u know it u will be powershifting it through alll the gears and rippng torque boxes!!

close to 200 bucks but worth everypenny...once u take itout of second gear it automatically puts the shifterback in the middle so all u really have to do is shift it up and down now need to move the shifter to the side like with the stock shifter...it also has adjustsable stoppers i have had hurst, steeda as well but none compare tot his one...imo....i have a tko 600 tranny and it comes with a nice shifte...but still not like pro5.0....its called the power tower i think

ive been waiting for my mgw short shifter for a while now but have not heard anything bad at all about it and its the same as a pro 5.0. With my experiance the pro 5.0 is a little loud. Hard to explain but research mgw before you buy at least

yeah me and roland talked about that... i think you were there too.. if the mgw is the same as a pro 5.0 ill buy that its a little cheaper too!

MGW I think what he meant by the MGW is the same is that it's the same price. They cost about the same, but the MGW is a different, and imo much better design. Like Jason said, I have never heard anything but excellent reviews of this shifter. I love the feel of it, and the handle design is far superior to any other shifter. The handle can rotate 360* to any position comfortable for you, and it will NOT come loose. With any other shifter, you will find yourself tightening the handle bolts constantly unless you have lockwashers and a tube of green loctite on them. Oh, and you might not want to shift that thing too hard if it has a stock shifter, there are no shift stops and you could overthrow a gear.

Definatly want to upgrade your shifter, Pro 5.0 and MGW are both quality pieces. This will help your 3rd gear problems

thanks.. i do have a cheap short throw in here.. so i didnt think a another short throw would fix the problem. i thought it was the way i was using my arm power to put the gear in 3rd.. instead of letting it slip out of second and slide into 3rd.. im vary intrested in either or the pro or the mgw.. i hope this fixes the problem.. if not ill work on slowing down the shift.. letting it flow!

one other trick you could try is to get a t-handle and angle the handle a little bit towards the passenger side of the car. This way when you hold onto it you hand will automatically want to push more in the dirrection of third.

All aftermarket shifters push the lever into the center position(between 3rd and 4th gears). So let the shifter do the work for you. Don't try to muscle it out of 2nd. Just push it straight forward(I use an open palm, which keeps you from forcing it) into third. As you're pushing it forward, the shifter will push it right making it go right into 3rd. Learn to be smooth first. Speed will come later.

when you shift from second to third...flip your hand upside down so the shifter come between your middle finger and ring finger and the knob is in your palm and push straight forward. the way your hand is makes you naturally push kind of away from you and youll hit third every time. try that before you spend money on a shifter.

used to do the same thing with my stock shifter, just too sloppy for spirited driving. i got a steeda tri-ax and i can shift faster and much smoother.

do you mean like im cuping my have with the shifter ball in the palm ?

I don't really agree with the "letting the shifter find 3rd" thing. Yes, the shifter centers itself to help you get to 3rd, but it seems like you would have to shift rediculously slow to let the shifter find 3rd. I do this while driving normally, but not when shifting hard. I just aim towards 3rd and push as hard and fast as I can, and it goes in fine every time. I guess it just takes practice.

The key is having a shifter with really stiff detent springs. Like the Pro 5.0 or the Steeda Tri-ax. I've been able to easily powershift(no letting up on the throttle between shifts) using these two shifters, in various Mustang's, with much success. I've probably only missed half a dozen shifts in thousands of powershifts over the past few years.
