I know this has been covered a ton but I just need some more direction. I have been thinking about ordering a 331 short block for my 93 gt. Also considering getting another GT, cause I found a 89 for a good deal and it would make a fun project to have on the side while keeping mine my daily driver. Either way, here is were I need more help: (budget is in mind, can't afford a dart block)
1.) I narrowed it down to three places for a 331, prices range from 1500-1700 for the short block. Then I plan on going with a trick flow kit- trackheat, not sure about going to a different cam or not, bolt ons. One reason why im thinking 331 and not 347 is maybe in the future adding a s/c (5-8 psi). However how worried should I be about the stock block holding up? About how much hp do you think a setup like that would have?
2.) If I can get a 351w short block for 2k or even a 408 for a little more(2100-2300), wouldn't the block strength(compared to a 302 based stroker) be worth the extra money? (especailly when a dart based 302 short block is so much more). $200-$300 and you get a stronger block. I have searched about doing the 351 swap so I understand some of the things you need like new oil pan, headers, motor mounts, etc. I just dont know which way I would go for heads and intake, etc. Going the 351 route, could I still use a trick flow kit? Or would there be no point to that? Don't you have to get heads that work with the swap headers? Like gt-40s or something? I was thinking maybe ordering a 351w long block, but stock heads sound boring to me and I'm pretty sure the hp ratings aren't too great+ weighs more than the 302.
3.) I'm still trying to figure out what suporting mods I would need with the 351w besides just the swap stuff. Seems like all the 351 stuff adds up, but then again won't it be cheaper than a dart block 331? And for a little more money be stronger than a stock 302 block? I think a 351w can hold 600hp correct? Adding to the overall cost would be the transmission but wouldn't that be the case with a 350-450 hp 331? Figured Id go with a TKO either way at some point.
4.) If either block goes into my 93 gt, it will remain a daily driver. I know reliability becomes an issue when you start adding mods, etc. How do the 331 and 351 compare as far as reliability. I want it to be a good street car, don't think it will see the track.
5.) My 93 has about 117k miles on it, has been my daily driver for the last 7 years, definitely feels tired. And I really want to start modding it and having some fun. Many people have told me to just focus on one project at a time, so I've been thinking a 331 would be a good "now" build up for my 93. And a 351 or 408 would be a better engine for "later on"(maybe not for a daily driver) and maybe for the 89 if i get it.
Thoughts??
