ok i have a friend that will sell me a brand new, never used e cam for $50. he is getting bigger cam for his motor. i was thinking that will be a good idea for that price, considering that cam costs about $150 to $200. right now i just have 3.73s and rebuilt aod with shift kit and tranny cooler. i will plan on doing the h/c/i combo later on. my question is, is it worth putting this cam in just like it is in this stock motor with 150,000 miles or finish saving up for my exhaust system that is coming for the spring? and what's the pros and cons for putting this cam in a stock motor. ps it is a daily driver.

i don't think you can ever go wrong with putting a cam in. for 50 bucks and the cost of a few more gaskets i say do it. as long as you don't have to remove your heads. if you have to do that then the gasket cost starts to get expensive.

Thats alot of work for maybe 10HP..I would wait for the heads and intake so you can appreciate the characteristics of the cam more. HP the cam CAN generate will be bottlenecked by the flow abilities of the stock heads and intake...you may infact find the low end torque significantly decreased.

agree with dman, you have to pull more than half the motor apart to do the cam anyway, instead of just pulling it apart installing the cam, and putting it back together, might as well put it back together w/ aftermarket heads n intake while your already torn apart -

I would wait and buy a cam that is suited for the heads you will be purchasing. If you don't know what heads you are getting i would wait. Plus i wouldn't cam stock heads with no work done to them.

You are probably best off sticking with the stock cam for the stock motor. You can potentially hurt your low end with just a stock block.

Not to thread jack... but is that what the e cam is best for? Modified? I ask because I just bought a set of Twisted Wedge heads and dont know the proper cam. I want a custom cam, but will it benefit me enough to weigh the costs?

I figure this will help GMOHANVA in the long run with info, but sorry if you feel I am threadjacking...

Many will tell you the E cam is best for propping open doors that want to blow shut....

The E is identical to Crane's old 2040 cam (Crane designed the E for FRPP); here's what they recommend to go along with that cam.....

"GOOD MID-RANGE AND STRONG TOP-END POWER, REQUIRES MODIFIED MASS AIRFLOW, AFTERMARKET INTAKE, PERF. CYLINDER HEADS AND HEADERS, MUST USE 5-SPD AND 3.55 OR NUMERICALLY HIGHER REAR GEARS. REQUIRES CRANE SPRINGS AND RETAINERS. (50 STATE LEGAL 85-93, C.A.R.B. E.O. D-225-46) BASIC RPM 2400-6000"

Even with the proper mods, the bottom end is usually pretty soft with that cam -- ESPECIALLY for a mostly stock daily driver with an AOD...that's why Crane says 'MUST USE 5-SPD...'

So, if you decide to go forward with it, do the other mods first -- ESPECIALLY the higher speed stall converter.

Its great for a performance option that is CARB legal. Fiveohwblow, it is impossible to beat a custom cam but I was really pleased with my TFS stage 1 cam with TW heads. Definately more power than the E. And the price is very reasonable.

I wouldn't want to lose the low-end by putting an E in the stock build.
Unless the choppy idle means that much to you.

If you want to have a more aggressive idle than stock and actually make about 20-30 more low and mid range power digits I suggest the Crane 2020.

For $50 unused I would buy it just to make a buck.
I imagine someone surfing the forums would give you $75-120 for it.

The Trick stg 1 cam is good for a 3" stroke Windsor and does match the as cast TW heads well. The TW heads are a little intake biased so the extra duration and lift on the exhaust side with the cam makes them compliment eachother well.

So, this would be a nice cam with my Cobra motor and C&L 73mm, right?

I would buy that cam for $50 quick. But wait till you do your heads and intake to put it in. Your 150k mile stock springs probally won't work with that cam. They will need replacing when you do the cam.

we put an e-cam in my brothers auto 90 gt, it did not lose any low end torque at all. its actually faster off the line then with the stock cam. has no problem smokin the tires from a stop. hes raced 2 5 speed gt's both with gears and mods and smoked them both. i would just buy it and put it in for the future.

I'd personally buy it and sit on it until you atleast get an intake even though that wont maximize the combo it'll still be better than stock...my old coupe trapped 99 mph with just full exhaust, with b-cam and edelbrock performer it trapped 105 and some change, stock maf, t/b, and injectors incase you were wondering. I have an e-cam in my room but cant afford supporting parts for now or anytime soon so i'm atleast going to wait til i get a manifold.

An E cam will lose low-end over the stock cam, period.
Unless your brother's car had some serious timing/ignition related issues prior to the swap.
