Should i ditch the spare for a custom enclosure?

I have a fox body notchback thinking of using the spare wheel compartment to use it as a custom enclosure i heard it will sound much louder than a box and ill have extra space in the trunk is it a good idea?

as far as the custom enclosure goes ill be using fiber glass or plywood and bonding black carpet or vinyl i want to see if 2 12" subs will fit if not ill try one 15" and ill be putting a mesh grill over them just to make sure they dont get crushed as for the amplifiers i might just drill them to the back seats ( cutting the sheet metal out and use new edge fold down seats) if not possible ill just throw them under the custom enclosure aswell in that case ill do a cutout on the plywood or fiberglass than take off the housing from the amps flip them over to expose the internals and use plexi-glass to cover them maybe throw in some white neon lights so you can see them not trying to rice it out i just want my car to have a clean look from interior-trunk


what do you guys think? have any set ups in-mind? throw idea's at me thanks!

You will end up with a clean look by doing that, just dont plan on getting a flat any time soon and carry a can of "fix a flat". As far as the speakers, the airspace available in the tire well will really only allow 1 12in sub while still maintaining decent sound. As far as it sounding better than a "box" style enclosure I would say the tire well will have no advantages as far as the sound goes.

yeah was wondering if it had some advantages since it seems it would make the spare compartment rattle but i could probably benefit from it since it will have the chassis vibrate pretty hard so noone will want to sit in the back seat due to their lungs feeling like theyre going to collapse but yeah i was thinking since ill be working with fiberglass ill have both subs pointing vertically upwards away from eachother that would be nice thanks for your input!

I had an '01 Mustang with a custom fiberglass enclosure in the spare tire space and I enjoyed it. Had a 15" JL Audio speaker in it and it could handle anything you could throw at it. It could have used a bit more airspace but still sounded awesome and was more than enough and actually was a bit much. I could maybe get some pics of it if you wanted as well. The guy who built the box had first built the similar box for a fox and then built this one for my car so i know it could be very similar.

sounds pretty cool 15" would be alot for a tiny little notch the trunk would probably explode doesnt sound bad though might sell my 12's and buy a 15" for less work of measuring to fiberglass the 2 subs in post some pics i'd like to see them. and i think the trunks are similar on the bottom ends but different by height since the new edges trunk is taller ill be using some new edge seats too since the back pads of the seats will be skinny ill probably mount 2 sub vent cones on each side of the seats with fiberglass to have the bass sound more smooth and have a cleaner look.
