For anyone that owns a Fox-body Mustang, you will be aware of the 3-1/2" speakers located at the top corners of the dashboard. My are getting kind of worn-out from age and I was wondering if I should even bother replacing them. Here are a few reasons why:
1) I've noticed that there are quite a few car audio manufacturers that don't make 3.5" speakers any more.
2) The few that are still on the market seem to have a continuous power rating (RMS) too high to be effectively powered by almost all aftermarket head-units (as in the built-in amp in them) but a max power rating so low that even the least powerful amps in most manufacturer's line-ups will blow them. Therefore, if I run them off the deck I can expect distortion since they're being underpowered but I run the risk of blowing them by hooking them up to an amp too powerful for them to handle.
I've also figured out dash-speakers aren't really the optimal imaging spot, and the door panel speakers are probably the most important ones in the entire car since the rear speakers in most vehicles are used for fill.
So in conclusion, I was thinking of just disconnecting them. My head unit has some sort of fancy "DSO" function which is supposed to make the speakers sound like they're up by your head but the function was intended for the door speakers and the dash speakers seem to get in the way of that. Anyone think this is a good idea?
