What is easier? i am going to replace my clutch also, so maybe pulling both at once will be the best way to go? Is it hard to balance the engine and trans all as one when removing it? Any tips to this? i have never done this before..
(I read a couple of posts on this but wanted some more input)

Is there an alt to using a plate on the intake manifold to pull the engine?

Once the engine is out, are there some things I should replace? I was going to replace the motor mounts, maybe trans, but if you can think of some other items.

Pull the trans out first from under the car. It is way to much of a pain to do both at once. Its long and you'll end up smashing the motor into things trying to get both out.

You could run a chain from a grade 8 bolt in the front of one of the heads, to another grade 8 bolt in the opposite head and lift that way.

If you are doing the clutch, get a new pilot bearing and throwout bearing.

Motor and trans mounts are always a good idea, the first time I pulled my motor, the mounts were damn near ripped in half.

I would pull the accessories and brackets off of the front of the motor. I have always found this to be easier, more room and chain mounting attachment.

I like to pull them as one and to install as one. I just hate getting under the car where i already dont have enough room to try to lower the trans out. But in the past i have unbolted the tranny and took them out seperatly. But i always install as one unit.

I have never used anything besides the plate on the lower intake. Its just easier to me. But i have seen guys use chains on the heads(bolts in header holes i assume???? not sure....) which seems to work.

I just took the satrter off, removed the bolts from the x-pipe, removed tranny bolts from the bellhousing, removed engine mount bolts, and ground, and lifted the engine out of the car and never touched the tranny mount

I honestly dont know how you guys can do it all together...I have tried on more than one occasion, all different height configurations, etc.

I Have NEVER been able to get it out, or back in as one.

Enlighten me, please!

Sn95's are a bit harder to get them in, than in a fox. I have been there for both of them... Some people do not think about the difference between either...

I would undo it at the bellhousing if you are just doing 'engine work', but if you plan on tranny swap, then pull it together.

You can angle the tranny in pretty steeply, and sometimes jacking up the front of your car helps with the approaching angle...

I have put bolts in the lower intake top, and on the heads. I would have a stud/bolt in the driver side front head and one on the back passenger head as well. It balances fine...

Remove/Install slowly so you don't kink anything...

Good Luck!

when I pulled my stock motor I pulled the trans and engine as one.

I jacked the car up and with a cherry picker got the trans to swing low enough and then just worked it out. I did lower the car after the oil pan was at the rad. support IIRC and then just picked up the t5 tailshaft and rotated it 90* out of the way of the car and set the engine down on some wood for support. It took me all of 20-30min to pull the engine and then pull the trans off the engine by myself.

I put the trans in seperate as I had to have the hoist back and had an issue with getting the 4 drive shaft bolts out and had to install it later. I wanted to install it at the same time though...just didnt have the time.

The trick is really simple

You get the front of the car high ... really high

Its sitting on a frame machine..

so its a good 2-3 feet off the ground, and I have access to the entire middle of the car, so I think I will try and pull the trans out with it..

For my cherry picker I am going to use a bobcat.. I almost have everything ready to come out, will prob pull it tomorrow..

Lol @ Bobcat. Hey, whatever works. I have used a small crane to pull an engine before.

If you use chains, MAKE SURE you use high grade thick chains. My friend had his hand under an engine / tranny a few years ago trying to balance it when the chain snapped. He doesn't have a fully functioning hand anymore, as it was broken in MANY places. Just be careful. Don't even stick that hand where it may get caught, even with good chains.

I pulled the engine with the trans a couple of weeks ago.. The only thing i didn't like was the gallon of ATF that leaked all over the floor from the end of the trans
