should the vibration Damper be this hard to get off?

As you guys know I'm embarking on my first head swap..........So I'm preparing to take off the timing cover on the engine and I've taken the main bolt out of the center of the vibration damper and I'm using the proper tool that attaches via three bolts that screw into the damper to remove....I'm using a Huge breaker bar to turn the damn tool and I feel like I'm going to break something....

I keep turning and turning and she's not popping off.....is this normal?? think I'm going to call it a day for now and pick back up tomorrow to see what yall say..

only did it once and yeah it took forever and was hard to get off. my tool was a pita to use as well, the grips kept on popping off.

I'm not looking forward to putting it back on, thats for sure.

I hope you have the tool that actually screws into the dampener itself, and not some hack-job 3 jaw puller. Did you get the washer out as well? There was a washer on the bolt that held the dampener on a 302 I just tore down, and the washer stayed in the dampener. I was trying to pull it forever, until I noticed the mangled washer in there.

Also, don't apply heat, as it can separate the pieces of the dampener. Just take your time, and give the center a squirt or two of P'Blaster.

No offense I have been there and done that

FYI a new one is gonna be real expensive.

Why would you assume I destroyed it and didn't purchase the proper tools and do the appropriate reading before hand?



Alright, I had the washer off (the real thick one eh)...and yeah, I'm using the proper tool....I just wanted to make sure I'm not missing something like with the starter when my damn Haynes manual told me there were only 2 bolts

I will PB it a few times and go back at it again this morning...

Right on, it looks like you are on the right track. You can try taking off one of the inspection plates on your trans, and sticking a ratchet extension in one of the holes in the flywheel to keep it from turning on you. Good luck breaking that thing free!
