Wow this seems like a dumb question but can't you skip shift in the new GT Manual trannys? The tuners say "eliminate skip shift feature". Any manual I've ever had would allow me to go 1,3,5 or similar? The "skip shift" feature allows for 1 to 4th gear? Does this mean you can't 1,3,6...2,4,6 or whatever?

The tuner for eliminating skip shift is for a programmable feature the car comes with for fuel economy. With the new mustangs the first switch is from 1 to 4 for duel economy, that's how they advertise their high mpg. The tuner for elimate skip shift, just makes it like a normal stick. You can switch it however you see fit, you will still be able to 1-3-5, or 2-4-6 which ever you perfer. the only thing i see it making a difficult switch it to obtain the 1 to 4 so easily at the beginning.

Got it...except I don't get why they advertise a skip shift feature when it can be done anyway

Hi beviking,

As LAVAgt2012 posted, Skip Shift locks out 2 (Second) and 3 (Third) gears for improved fuel economy. So it appears if you decide on that tune, you'll lose that ability. Have a good afternoon!

Skip shift is a feature that is "forced" on you to shift from 1st to 4th for higher mpg. In the "right" condition, you CAN'T shift from 1st to 2nd or 3rd, you HAVE to shift to 4th. That's why some people took it off with a tune. It only enforce skip shift when you drive like your grandma. I have my car for 3+ months and not once have i experience it. I have a 3.73 gearing GT and my normal shift point is 3000-3500 rpm.

Im sorry guys but I wanna clarify this, the skip shift will only work when shifting at low rpms?? So say i wanted to just straight up row through the gears I would have to shift at much higher rpms??

It sounds like you don't have to shift at higher rpms to avoid the 2nd,3rd gear skip, it only happens if you take off really slow in 1st. I imagine there is an rpm target used to actuate the skip feature but idk.

Hi sgirgiss1214,

The Skip Shift feature uses vehicle speed, RPM and load on the engine to determine the ideal time to shift, so it isn't just at low RPMs. That's what helps get improved fuel economy. Have a good one!

So it is that much of a pita that you unplugged it? Sorry guys, just having a hard time wrapping my head around this. Is it that you'd take off slow and then decide to get on it but it was locked out?

Beware! Skip shift can strike at anytime! Well, maybe not at any time but, you could just unplug it as has been suggested. If you did that, you could still go from 1st to 4th, skiping 2nd and 3rd, if that's how you wanted to shift the tranny. IMO, you don't need that feature 'built into' the tranny. It's like having a 'nanny tranny'.

Exactly! That's why I didn't "get it"! Why do you need a nanny tranny? Just drive the d@mn thing 1st to 4th, make the mileage claim with an * and then a footnote saying *if driven easy etc.... Why put in one more gadget that could break? Skip shift striking at anytime would be a pita!!! Thanks for the clarity mbuckcoyot!

-Now that I own 2012 GT(1 day old)---The trans. hasnt SKIP Shifted, not that I could tell.....I will say this 6speed needs 'brokin in' or somethin, the trans. not near as smooth shifting as my 2008 HondaAccord(5speed manual)---MAYBE an aftermarket SHIFTER would help, NO??

Let me know yer thoughts, por favor...(please)

I have no complaints on how the tranny shifts in mine. It's the smoothest shifting tranny I've had in a Mustang. However, I am going to change the shifter soon with the one offered by MGW. They went far beyond what other after market folks did. MGW not only designed a new shifter but also designed a whole new shift box and guide. They are expensive as aftermarket shifters go but, IMO, no one comes close. This may also solve some of the shifting problems some have had.

Edited to add: The shift box assembly and guide are crap that Ford is using. Ya here that FORD!!

If one drives the car aggressive all the time, you should not encounter skip shift.

The places I found it operated in were slow corners, like right turns in traffic. Easy roll in first, go to get second as traffic speeds up, I find the car so slyly slid me into 4th and no get up and go in 4th at 20 mph.

That is why I unplugged it. Plus, I like the control I have....

I've driven stick for almost 30 years and the skip-shift 'feature' is the biggest pain in the you-know-what... My 2011 Saleen break-in recommends keeping it under 4K RPM for the first 500 miles and under 5K RPM for the first 1000 miles. Needless to say, trying to keep the RPM's down plays right into the skip-shift pattern. I was trying to teach my daughter how to drive the car this weekend and she hit the skip-shift several times, enough that even she finds it extremely annoying. As soon as it gets past 1K miles, the damn thing is getting disconnected....

I own a 2012 GT with the 3.73:1 rear end. There is no skip shift that disallows going to 2nd gear from 1st gear. What does happen, on the information display, it shows a display that reads "1 to 4 shift for fuel econ". Sometimes I do it, other times I ignore it.
