Switching over to a bias ply front tire for the track and/or a set of skinnies can help as well. A radial tire especially a large, wide diameter tire/rim combo like a 245/45/17's or wider on an 8"-9" rim will experience hardly any side to side motion like a soft sidewall, bias ply drag tire. As a result, the back end moves around all over the place and the front end stays planted, this will cause the act of keeping the car going strait down the track, to be a bit of a chore.
If the bias ply isn't an option, going with a skinnier tire/rim package would help some, since a narrower tire is less prone to darting from side to side, like a wide tire is. You could always let a few pounds of air out of your current front tires to soften the side walls up a little, but that’s kind of counter productive to achieving your best time, since softer front tires increases their rolling resistance.
