My '95 GT auto drives like it has a slipping box. Compared with my boyfriends '89 firebird it's a real hog, (this is a major embarrassment). I've been advised by the local garage that a shift kit will make all the difference in the world. Before I go ahead and have the work done I'd like to hear other owner's opinions. Has anyone else found it to make a difference? Are the stock cars really this slow? Would a diff' upgrade be a better idea? Any advice would be greatly received.

Posted via Mobile Devicesounds like its time for a T5 conversion.

Like the others have said, a t5 conversion will make a world of difference. Youll lose less power and actually be able to put the car in its power band instead of letting the slushbox aode try to get it right. A shift kit will help it shift faster and firmer but it wont make it an overnight racer. Chances are you have the 2.73 rear gears. Stepping up to 3.55, 3.73 or even 4.10s will be the biggest difference maker short of a t5 swap. It will make it seem like a new car. If highway driving and gas mileage is a concern you may want to stay in the 3.XX gearsets but that point is vastly debated. And if your boyfriend drives a Firebird, you may also want to consider the old boyfriend swap. Plenty of Ford guys out there.:nice:

PS - Im sure youre boyfriends great and all that, just messing around with you.

PPS - But seriously though, LOTS of Ford guys.... LOL

+1 for gears
+2 girls love to ride on horses :)

If you plan on keeping the aode, gears...at least 373's would be my first choice........4:10's would great...with the od no big deal.....shift kit............one of the best mods I have is the stall..........not sure what you have done to your engine....this will effect stall......not many of us aode's remaining...lol.... but a properly built and matched auto driveline is a good thing......:D

How many Ford guys exactly??!!!!

Thanks a lot for all the great advice, I am looking forward to finding out what a difference it will make to my lil' pony!

Also, this is my first auto in my 10 years of driving!!!

Thanks again!

Ps, So, seriously, how many Ford guys?!

Trust me, theres a lot Im sure. Not many girls are into Mustangs, and even fewer have the desire to make them go faster. Have you decided which route youre going to go as far as getting her up to your desired performance level? If it was me, it would be gears because theyre the easiest to obtain and have installed, followed by a T5 swap as itll take more time and more money to find all the parts needed. Either way, good luck and keep us posted.

gears and exhaust. the aode is a pig but you can get around it with some stuff. i had a bad experience with my shift kit blowing the tranny so i don't recommend them. a bigger stall converter will do more IMO than a shift kit.

if gas mileage isn't a concern do 4:10 gears. at that point with the rest of the car stock it will make a HUGE difference. might want to do a routine maintenance on stuff, rotor, cap, wires, filters, fluids, clean the MAF, etc. do a search and you'll find more info than you'll care to look at.

If the issue was related to the shift kit it must be because it wasn't set up correctly. I pound on mine fairly regularly and haven't had a problem with my mods. Can't see a problem with a stock engine.

Yeah Ive never really heard of a shift kit causing damage to a tranny when installed properly. Usually the culprit is an already bad tranny that gets a shift kit installed and then craps out from the new levels of abuse that it now takes from an overzealous driver. A lot of people think that a shift kit somehow makes the tranny suddenly bulletproof.
