sluggish after x-pipe

I have a 96 gt with a K-N cone, flows, and recently put on a bbk x-pipe. What the deal is my car is feeling really sluggish and i hear you guys are the ones to come and ask. any help woul;d be appreciated. Thanks.

did you make sure you O2 Sensors weren't fouled up in any way during the install?

one of them is bad, but im unknowledge as to if that could be a problem. also i have white smoke coming from the exhaust which smells like its running rich.

Did u unplug the battery and wait about 10 minutes to reset the EEC? Try that and see if it helps. Also, does it just feel sluggish down low or even at WOT?

yeah try disconnecting the battery so it reset the computer

sluggish at both but more noticeable at low rpm. it runs smooth at WOT but just low powered...

Thats wierd. My old GT pulled like a raped ape at WOT in the upper rpm's after the x-pipe. The o2 sensors in the back are there just for the cats, so if its throwing a code that theyve gone bad, don't worry about it. once again, disconnect the battery and wait a bit

Right on. I have the battery disconnected right now. But also, The check engine light hasn't come on since I installed the x-pipe. Don't know why. It has been on befor so I don't think the light is burned out.

It won't come on right away. Its after like 50 miles of driving

are you sure it's white smoke?

As white smoke is most common with cermaic bearing failures, but that would be for turbocharged cars.

If it has a blue tinge to it, then it's oil smoke which is bad. If it's running rich then black or hazy smoke would be more common, but that would be really rich.

Are you sure it wasn't just steam?

As for the car running bad, was it immediate after putting the X-pipe on, or did it start after (or before). The X shouldn't be able to make the car run bad, if anything it might lean out the mixure a little. Did you do anything else to the car when you fitted the X-pipe?

Although I tend to agree that the sensor is the most likely cause as it will mess up the readings for the ECU.

Instead of "white smoke", it could be fuel vapor that is unspent by the move to an off-road midpipe.

Are you sure you don't have any exhaust leaks?

yea there is no blue, i knew if i saw a blue in the smoke id freak out, but i think im just gonna replace the sensors and see how that works. as to doing anything else during the x-pipe install...no just the pipe. i did happen to reset the computer last night and the car came alive again, but as you said before HoustonGT, after the 50 miles of driving when the computer reads a bad sensor itll go back to driving like ****.

Naw, it won't go back to drivin bad. Im tellin you, those rear o2 sensors do absolutely nothing. They are simply there to verify the presence of catalytic converters. So, once you get an O/R pipe, they throw a o2 sensor code. It doesn't affect performance though. The problem was that you didn't reset the EEC the first time and now that you unhooked the battery, it reset and came alive. It'll stay that was even when the light comes on, so enjoy

Mine ran fine and only had a little bit of smoke because it was burning off the cermaic coating inside the pipe.

So when you put an O/R X or H on do you need to change anything. MIL Elim or new O2s.
If those did cause a problem couldn't you fix that with a hand held tuner (XCal2)?

You can use MIL's or a tuner like X-Cal or Predator to get rid of the SES light caused by the rear O2's. Which is a good idea so incase something happens in the future the light can still come on to tell you. Theres nothing wrong with re-using the O2's unless one is bad. If its a bad front 02 then it will need to be replaced.
