Smog & A/C Elim - Did some searching

Did some searching for A/C, AC Elim, AC Delete, Parasitic... Also searched rangerstation.com.

So, anyone delete the AC or smog off the 2.3? With ready made parts? '88 2.3.

Well...the AC isn't exactly hard to remove...take out the compressor, bracket, condensor, accumulator, and all the lines. Since it runs off a separate belt you don't have to worry about anything else.

And what "smog" equipment are you talking about? EGR? The EGR can just be blocked off with a plate and unhooked.

yeah, is there any way to make the charcoal canaster not so sticking out like a sore thumb?

Well...on my turbo coupe, I took the bracket that the charcoal canister is on and flipped it around to put the canister inside the fenderwell. Then I welded just a small extension off the bottom of it for the canister to sit on (if you take the canister off and look at the back of it, you'll see what I'm talking about), so it would fit as there wasn't enough room for it to sit on the bracket like it did stock. I did it originally because I thought it would be in the way of my intercooler pipes, but it turned out I didn't need to do it. It's pretty easy to do though.

The way cars are designed to today, don't bother. I have *heard* in some cases, people have lost HP, and my 93 just knocked like there was no tomorrow while I plugged it till I got a new one. The EGR really doesn't hurt being attached, it is only open durring certian conditions, like not idle or WOT.

Well I guess it dependsnon your situation. On my '90, I blocked off the EGR because I put on the long tube header and it had no EGR fitting. On my Turbo Coupe I actually had to cut the EGR provision off the manifold because otherwise, the TPS on my 60mm throttle body wouldn't have fit. I never experienced any problems with "knocking" on either car.

I too made a plate to block the EGR when I put my Ranger header on. I still get good gas milage, last trip I got 26.5 mpg. Here is a pic of the plate that I made of some sheet metal.

Do 2.3's even have smog pumps? Neither my 92 notch or my 93 vert had one. Just the A/C on one side and the alt and P/S pump on the other.

A/C is a seperate belt so you can just remove it without affecting anything else. Although, unless you are doing it for weight savings, there is no parasitic loss unless its on.

I think that at some point, the 2.3's in the Mustangs musta had smog pumps on them, because I saw something awhile back referring to a thermactor pump on a 2.3L but I can't remember what it was. Maybe they had them in the Mustang II's?

maybe if you live in california, but I can tell you my 93 hatch hasn't had one. At one time or another, because of a locked compressor and very bad A/C belt, I ran it without the belt and no A/C just fine. And really, how much weight is an A/C? Just remove the belt, and if you really want to, you can remove the unit. Who knows, durring the hotter months you might want that belt on there and a some freon.

As for if there's a smog pump? Couldn't tell you, but if it's with the A/C on the same belt, and it's just those two, I would say it's fine.

Honestly, in the hotter months the A/C is definitely worth those few extra pounds and a few less horsepower in my opinion.

Yeah, if it works

On my Mustang, I had it fixed once, it worked for a couple months and then stopped working after that...on my thunderbird it was completley discharged.

When I got my 93 coupe I wanted it badly even thou irs kinda ****ed up but I wanted it mainly cause of the awsome working ac and a perfict 2.3Turbo project.

I would never eliminate the ac from a daily driver if it had any chance of working. Smog pumps on the other hand, the one in my Mustang II was about 50lbs, so he had to go.

My A/C works great! The heat on the other hand isn't so fast acting.
